Chapter 7 - The Final AuditTwo weeks later, the spring sun finally broke through the heavy Chicago clouds, casting a warm golden glow over Lake Michigan.

The penthouse at the Drake was quiet.
Mara stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, sipping a cup of green tea while reviewing the final forensic audit report delivered by her cousin Viktor.
The numbers were staggering. Grant had embezzled nearly two million dollars in research grants to fund luxury vacations, high-end cars, and expensive gifts—much of it funneled through shell companies connected to Chelsea Reeves. The federal indictments were already being drafted. The Department of Justice wasn't just looking at suspension; they were looking at federal penitentiary time for insurance fraud and corporate corruption.
Arthur Pendelton had quietly retired, citing "health reasons," while three other board members had resigned before the investigators could subpoena their personal bank records.
Harbor Grace Medical Center, under Mara’s direct, unmasked leadership, had officially reinstated the Al-Rashid endowment. Sheikh Omar had personally flown back to Chicago to sign the new agreement over lunch, praising Mara’s uncompromising integrity.
A soft chime sounded at the door.
Mara walked over and pulled it open.
It wasn't a courier or a lawyer. It was Hannah Pierce, holding a fresh pastry box from a local bakery and a thick stack of new administrative proposals.
"Morning, boss," Hannah smiled, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "You missed the 9:00 AM budget review. I made executive decisions on the pediatric wing staffing. Hope you don't mind."
Mara smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that she hadn't worn in years.
"I trust your judgment completely, Hannah. Come in. Let's look over the numbers."
As Hannah set the pastries down on the mahogany table, Mara glanced back toward the hallway table.
There, resting beside the entryway, sat the scratched wooden box with its broken brass latch. Her father's box.
It was empty now. Every document, every confession, every ledger had been handed over to the proper authorities, weaponized with precision to restore justice.
She didn't need the box anymore.

She didn't need to hide in the shadows, waiting for someone else to take the applause.
The crown had finally returned to its true queen, and the doors of Harbor Grace were open once again—not to fame, but to healing.
