Chapter 1 - The Weight of a FeatherThe silence in the grand study wasn’t peaceful; it was heavy, suffocating under the weight of an unexploded bomb buried somewhere in Lucas Blackwood’s past. For seven days, he had lived like a cornered wolf, trusting no one. The man who ordered hits with a flick of his wrist, who had built a criminal empire on the bones of betrayers, was now paralyzed by an eight-year-old girl holding a damp, folded piece of notebook paper.

"My mother gets paid on Fridays," Emma whispered, her thin fingers tightly clutching the hem of the oversized apron. "She said if she doesn't secure the contract for the Blackwood estate, we have to move back to South Boston by Monday. And the water is already turned off."

Lucas stared at her. His mind, usually a razor-sharp instrument calculating trajectories, alibis, and betrayals, ground to a halt. He looked at the white apron—its frills slightly frayed at the edges—and felt an unfamiliar, stinging tightness behind his ribs.

"Harold," Lucas said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the dark, gravelly resonance that usually made grown capos tremble.

The study door clicked open instantly. Harold, gray-haired, sharp-eyed, and impeccably dressed, stepped inside. His eyes flicked to the child, then to his boss.

"Sir?"

"Get the Mercedes warmed up. Not the Bentley. The armored one." Lucas stood up, towering over the little girl. He reached out, his calloused, scarred fingers gently taking the damp resume from her grip. "We are going to make a house call."

Emma’s breath hitched. "Are... are you firing Mommy?"

Lucas looked down into those vast, pale blue-gray eyes—eyes that held a lifetime of survival compressed into eight short years.

"No, Emma," Lucas said, his voice softening just enough to surprise even himself. "We are going to make sure your mother has a job. And a doctor. And running water."

He turned to Harold, his mob boss persona instantly snapping back into place, cold and lethal. "Find out who planted the bomb under my car seven days ago. If they have any connection to the Carter family, or if anyone dared use a child to get inside my perimeter... flay them."
