Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the AtticThe rain lashed against the bulletproof windows of the Mercedes as it sliced through the midnight Boston streets. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Emma had fallen asleep in the back seat, curled into a ball against the plush leather, exhausted by a day that would have broken a grown man.

Lucas sat in the front passenger seat, staring out at the blurred neon lights. His phone buzzed against his palm. It was a encrypted text from Vane, his head of security.
Boss. We ran the background check on Clara Carter. Clean. Too clean. Orphaned at twelve, worked three jobs, no criminal ties, no debt to loan sharks. But... her landlord is Marcus Vance.
Lucas’s jaw tightened. Marcus Vance. A mid-level rival trying to muscle in on the docks.
"Turn around," Lucas ordered Harold, his eyes narrowing.
"Sir? We're two blocks from the Carter apartment."
"Dr. Vale is already there with our men. Clara is safe for the next twenty minutes," Lucas said, cold fury bleeding into his tone. "If Marcus Vance owns her building, this isn't a coincidence. It's a setup. A carefully engineered trojan horse."
Harold slammed on the brakes, the car skidding slightly on the slick asphalt before executing a sharp U-turn. "You think the child was sent?"
"No," Lucas growled, remembering the damp resume, the genuine terror in Emma's eyes, the oversized apron. "Emma didn't know. That's what makes it brilliant. They used a starving woman's desperation and an innocent child to walk right past my outer gates without setting off a single internal alarm."
Lucas’s phone rang. It wasn't a text; it was a live audio feed from Dr. Vale’s encrypted comms unit inside the Carter apartment.

Lucas pressed the speaker button.
Static hissed, followed by the sound of heavy coughing, and then Dr. Vale’s panicked voice: "Boss! We have a situation. Clara Carter’s fever isn't natural. It’s chemical. And... sweet Christ, there's a wire under the mattress."
