Chapter 3 - The Crocodile Tears

Ethan didn't waste a single second. Within an hour, he was speeding toward the prestigious St. Regis Hotel in Dallas, where intelligence reports indicated Hannah was staying in the presidential suite.

He didn't bring Vanessa. He didn't tell his mother. He knew he had to play the role of the tragic, repentant husband.

When he arrived at the penthouse floor, the elevator doors opened to reveal two towering security guards who blocked his path. "Name?" one demanded.

"I'm Ethan Cole! I'm her husband!" Ethan shouted, trying to project his usual authority, though his sweat-stained collar betrayed his terror. "Tell her I need to see her! It’s about our family!"

The double doors to the penthouse opened, and Arthur Pendelton stepped out, holding a clipboard. "Ah, Mr. Cole. The dynamic visionary of Dallas. Do sit down. The Chairwoman will grant you exactly five minutes."

Ethan was escorted into a sprawling suite that overlooked the entire Dallas skyline. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of iced water, was Hannah. She didn't turn around immediately. She let him simmer in the silence.

"Hannah! Baby, please!" Ethan dropped to his knees right there on the plush Persian rug, his face a mask of manufactured agony. Tears actually welled in his eyes. "I am so, so sorry! I didn’t mean any of it. The stress of the business... it drove me mad! I was out of my mind!"

Hannah turned around slowly, looking down at him as if he were a bug on her shoe. "Get up, Ethan. You look pathetic."

Ethan scrambled to his feet, reaching out to grasp her hands, but she stepped back, out of his reach. "Hannah, I’ve always loved you! Remember Colorado? The lake? We built a life together! Vanessa means nothing to me, she was just a temporary distraction because I felt like I couldn't provide enough for you! If I knew your father was—"

"If you knew my father was a billionaire, you would have treated me like a queen," Hannah interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "But because you thought I was a nobody, you treated me like garbage. You proved who you really are when you thought I had nothing."

"Think of the children!" Ethan begged, using his final card. "Noah and Lily! They need their father! They need our family home! If Cole Capital goes under, we lose everything! The mansion, the legacy, their future!"

Hannah let out a cold, sharp laugh that cut through Ethan like a knife.

"My children's future was secured the moment you said they were no longer yours," Hannah said, leaning forward so her face was inches from his. "They are currently enrolled in the most prestigious academy in New England. They have private trust funds that your entire net worth couldn't pay the interest on. They don't need a father who measures love in balance sheets."

"Hannah, please... give me a chance to fix this. Don't call in the $400 million loan," Ethan pleaded, his voice cracking. "It will ruin me."

"Your five minutes are up, Mr. Cole," Arthur Pendelton said, stepping between them.

As Ethan was dragged out of the suite by security, Hannah called out one last time: "Oh, and Ethan? Tell your mother to enjoy her charity luncheons while she can. The country club called. Her membership has just been revoked."
