Chapter 5 - The Fall of the King

The downfall was swift, public, and brutal.

Within months, Ethan Cole was convicted of multiple counts of grand larceny, securities fraud, and tax evasion. His hundreds of millions vanished into legal fees, asset forfeitures, and restitution fines. The glass-and-stone mansion in Preston Hollow was seized by the federal government and auctioned off.

The ultimate irony? The anonymous buyer who purchased the mansion for a fraction of its value was none other than the Hartwell Estate.

On the day of Ethan’s sentencing, the courtroom was packed with journalists. Ethan sat at the defense table wearing a cheap, ill-fitting grey suit—a pathetic shadow of the man who once ruled Dallas high society. His mother, Margaret, sat in the gallery, dressed in plain clothes, her wealth completely stripped away, forced to move into a tiny, one-bedroom apartment in the outskirts of the city.

The judge slammed the gavel down. "Ethan Cole, for your crimes against your investors and the state, I sentence you to twelve years in federal prison, with no possibility of parole."

Ethan buried his face in his hands, weeping openly as the bailiffs put him in handcuffs. As he was led out of the courtroom, he saw Hannah standing at the back. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely unbothered. She didn't look at him with hatred; she looked at him with total indifference.

That was the ultimate punishment. He wasn't even worth her anger anymore.

Outside the courthouse, a swarm of reporters surrounded Hannah as she walked down the stone steps.

"Ms. Hartwell! How does it feel to completely dismantle Cole Capital?" one reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone forward. "Do you have any words for your ex-husband?"

Hannah stopped, looking directly into the main television camera.

"I didn't dismantle Cole Capital," Hannah said clearly. "Greed did. Let this be a lesson to every man who thinks that wealth gives him the right to discard his family, disrespect his wife, and abandon his children. True power isn't measured by what's in your bank account. It's measured by your integrity. And Ethan Cole had none."

With that, she turned and walked toward her waiting Maybach, leaving the chaotic media circus behind.
