Chapter 2 - The House of Glass"Mr. Stanley, I need you and Sophie to step outside with Officer Vance," Detective Miller instructed, his voice hardening into steel. "We have enough probable cause right now for an emergency arrest warrant. When your son and his wife land at Portland International Airport tomorrow morning, federal marshals and local precinct units will be waiting at the gate."

Officer Vance, a kind-hearted young woman with tears pooling in her eyes, gently crouched down to Sophie's level. "Hey there, sweetie. How about you and grandpa come with me out to my cruiser? We have some coloring books, and I think there might even juice and animal crackers waiting for you."

Sophie looked up at me, her big brown eyes searching my face for any sign of danger. "Are we going back to the dark room?" she whispered.

"Never," I said, my voice cracking as I knelt and kissed her forehead. "You are never going back there, Sophie. You are going to stay with me, always."

As Officer Vance led Sophie out to the sunlit porch, Detective Miller began securing the house. Crime scene tape was unspooled across the front door. The white furniture, the staged family portraits of Dennis and Trisha smiling on Mediterranean beaches, suddenly looked like the set of a horror movie. Every single frame on that wall was a monument to a lie.

I sat on the porch swing, staring out at the manicured lawn. My mind raced backward, connecting the missing puzzle pieces with terrifying clarity.

Maya hadn't abandoned us. Dennis and Trisha had driven her away—or worse.

My phone buzzed continuously in my pocket. Text messages from Dennis began pouring in.

Dennis: Dad, pick up the phone! You’re destroying everything! Trisha is having a panic attack! Dennis: That kid isn't even ours legally, we adopted her guardianship! You have no right! Dennis: Dad! Please!

I didn't open a single message. Instead, I opened my email and sent a single directive to my corporate attorney, Victoria Vance: Initiate immediate foreclosure and asset forfeiture proceedings on the Portland property, and pull every financial record tied to Dennis and Trisha over the last six years.

The game was over. The golden boy had finally run out of luck.
