Chapter 7 - Awakening from the NightmareThe lock clicked open behind me as the panicked nurse arrived with the master key. I shoved the door open and rushed into the room.

The woman on the bed flinched, shielding her face with her hands as if bracing for a blow. "Please," she whispered, her voice raspy from years of disuse. "Please, I took the medicine. Don't lock the door again."

Maya buried her face in my shoulder, unleashing six years of unshed tears, screams, and prayers into the fabric of my jacket.

"He said... he said if I ever tried to leave, he would take my baby away and nobody would ever find either of us," she sobbed. "He drugged me... he staged my car crash... he told me I was crazy."
"It's over," I repeated, kissing her hair over and over again. "The nightmare is over."
