Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the HallwayThe heavy wooden door shuddered as a shoulder slammed hard against it from the outside. The crash cart rattled against the frame.

“Olivia! Open the door!” Ethan’s voice echoed through the metal frame, distorted by fury and desperation. “It doesn't have to end like this! Hand over the drive, and I’ll let your mother walk out of here alive!”

Inside the room, Olivia gripped the bedsheets, her breathing shallow as another severe contraction racked her body. “Mom... the baby... something’s wrong!”

Margaret rushed to her daughter’s side, checking the fetal heart rate monitor powered by the backup battery. The numbers were dropping dangerously.

“You’re in labor, Olivia,” Margaret said, her voice dropping into a comforting, steady pitch despite the chaos outside. “Your body can’t take any more stress. I need you to focus on my voice. Ignore the door. Ignore Ethan.”

BOOM!

A silent breaching charge exploded against the lock, blowing the door frame inward and sending wood splinters flying across the room. The crash cart was shoved aside, and Ethan Brooks stepped through the dust, holding a suppressed pistol, his face bruised and eyes bloodshot with manic energy. Behind him stood General Raymond Vance, dressed in an immaculate civilian suit, holding a silenced weapon of his own.

“It’s over, Margaret,” Ethan hissed, pointing his gun directly at Margaret’s chest. “You should have stayed out of my marriage.”

“You didn't have a marriage, Ethan,” Margaret said, standing unyielding between the guns and her daughter. “You had an asset acquisition strategy. And you failed.”

General Vance stepped forward, his cold eyes scanning the room. “Colonel Carter, hand over the cloud encryption keys and the burner phone. Vanguard Tactical has resources you cannot comprehend. The judge who released Ethan? On our payroll. The hospital chief of medicine? On our payroll. You cannot fight an institution.”

Suddenly, the landline phone on the desk rang again.

General Vance frowned, shooting a glance at Ethan. “Did you disconnect the main trunk lines?”

“I cut everything!” Ethan stammered.

Margaret let out a dry, chilling laugh. “You cut the civilian lines, Major. But you didn't cut the Department of Defense secure satellite uplink I activated ten minutes ago.”

The door behind Vance and Ethan slammed open.

Before either man could turn, four heavily armed military police operators wearing OIG tactical gear flooded the room with stun grenades.

A blinding flash and deafening boom filled the space. Vance was hurled to the floor, his gun skittering across the tile. Ethan, disoriented and screaming, fired wildly into the ceiling before an OIG operator tackled him to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties.

Agent Miller stepped through the smoke, flashing a federal badge. “General Vance, Major Brooks, you are under federal custody for high treason, military embezzlement, attempted murder, and illegal weapons trafficking.”

Ethan thrashing on the floor, looked up at Margaret in pure terror. “How... how did you call them? The power was cut!”

Margaret leaned down close to Ethan’s ear, her voice dropping to a whisper. “The phone under Olivia’s mattress wasn't just recording you, Ethan. It was transmitting live to the Inspector General’s office for two weeks. We let you dig your own grave.”
