Chapter 6 - REBUILDING FROM THE ASHESBack in Querétaro, the neighborhood was quiet, but the Salgado household was alive with a warmth it hadn't felt in years.

The heavy, suffocating curtains in the living room had been torn down and thrown into the trash, replaced by clean, bright sheer panels that allowed the golden afternoon sunlight to flood every corner of the house. The smart home locks, cameras, and monitoring apps Marisol had used to control and isolate Emiliano had been completely uninstalled and replaced with standard, honest door handles.

In the kitchen, the scent of fresh garlic, simmering tomatoes, and roasted chicken filled the air.

Emiliano stood at the counter, chopping vegetables with a steady, confident rhythm. His arms, though still bearing faint fading marks of past bruises, moved with the easy grace of a boy who no longer needed to hide his hands or watch his back.

The front door opened, and heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Esteban walked in, tossing his heavy leather jacket onto the entryway chair and letting out a long, contented sigh. He had spent the entire morning at the municipal courthouse finalizing the asset freeze orders and ensuring that all properties wrongfully seized by Marisol's syndicate were legally returned to the rightful surviving families or placed in trust for Emiliano's future education.

“Something smells incredible in here,” Esteban said, walking into the kitchen and wrapping an arm around his son’s shoulders.

“Chicken stew, Dad. Just like Mom used to make,” Emiliano smiled, looking up with bright, clear eyes. “And I didn't burn a single tortilla this time.”

Esteban chuckled, kissing the top of his son's head. “Good. Because if you did, I’d have to demote you from master chef back to truck co-pilot.”

Emiliano reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver object, placing it gently on the center of the kitchen island.

It was his mother’s silver watch.

The glass face was clean, polished until it shone under the kitchen lights, and the second hand was ticking steadily forward, keeping perfect time.

“The federal investigators returned it this morning,” Emiliano said softly. “They said it was recovered from Marisol’s personal vault, along with everything else she tried to steal.”

Esteban picked up the watch, running his thumb over the engraved initials on the back: L.S. - Forever Yours. He smiled gently, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over him—a peace he hadn't known since the day Laura passed away.

“Keep it close, son,” Esteban said, strapping the watch gently around Emiliano’s wrist. “Your mother left you more than just a watch. She left you her strength. And nobody will ever take that away from you again.”
