Chapter 8 - SUNRISE OVER THE HORIZONThe sun began to crest over the distant mountain peaks, painting the sprawling Mexican landscape in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and violet.

Inside the cabin of the semi-truck, the radio played a soft, rhythmic melody while the tires hummed a steady, soothing rhythm against the asphalt. Querétaro was fading away in the rearview mirror, replaced by the endless expanse of the federal highway leading north toward Saltillo.

Emiliano turned his wrist, catching the glint of the morning sunlight reflecting off the polished glass face of his mother’s silver watch. The second hand ticked forward with unwavering precision, marking every second of a new beginning.

He looked over at his father, whose hands rested firmly, steadily on the steering wheel—the hands of a man who had weathered every storm, navigated every dark night, and protected his family through sheer grit, love, and unshakeable resolve.

“Dad?” Emiliano asked softly over the hum of the engine.

“Yeah, son?” Esteban replied, keeping his eyes on the horizon.

“Thank you for coming home early that night.”

Esteban smiled, glancing sideways at his son for a brief, meaningful second before turning his gaze back to the open road ahead.

“I was always going to come home, Emiliano,” Esteban said, his voice steady and warm. “Some roads are long, and some storms are heavy... but no matter how dark the night gets, a good father always finds his way back to the people who matter most.”

With the highway stretching out infinitely before them and the golden sunrise bathing the cabin in warm, radiant light, the truck accelerated smoothly into the distance, carrying father and son toward a future where shadows no longer existed.
