Chapter 1 - THE REVELATION OF RAYMOND HARRELL

The silence in the master bedroom was deafening after the call ended. I held the phone against my chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of my heart for the first time in three years. For thirty-six months, I had shrunk myself to fit into Spencer Reed’s world. I had worn modest clothes, stayed out of the spotlight, and endured his subtle condescension—all because I wanted a simple life away from my father’s overwhelming legacy. I wanted to be loved for me, not for the Harrell name.

How foolish I had been.

Spencer hadn't loved me for me. He had tolerated me while using my quiet nature as an excuse to sideline me. And tonight, he had traded me for Paisley Dawson and a shot at impressing the elite at the Apex Group charity gala.

Downstairs, the heavy oak doors opened, and the faint sound of footsteps echoed up the marble staircase. I expected Mrs. Evelyn, but instead, the door to the master suite swung open.

It was Harrison, my father’s chief of security, dressed in his signature charcoal suit. Behind him stood four men in dark attire.

"Miss Harrell," Harrison said, bowing his head respectfully. "Your father’s private helicopter is landing on the south lawn in three minutes. He instructed us to secure your belongings and escort you immediately."

Mrs. Evelyn stood in the doorway, her hands trembling over her apron, her eyes wide with shock. She had known me as the quiet, timid housewife who cooked dinner and folded laundry. She had no idea who I actually was.

"Mrs. Evelyn," I said softly, turning to her. "Thank you for being the only person in this house who showed me kindness."

"Mrs. Reed... I don't understand," she stammered.

"My name isn't Mrs. Reed," I said, pulling off the plain silver wedding band from my finger and placing it on the vanity table. "It's Phoebe Harrell. And tonight, Spencer Reed lost everything."

Three minutes later, I was stepping into the gleaming interior of the Harrell family helicopter. As the blades whirred to life and the mansion shrank below me, I looked down at the city skyline.

The Apex Group gala was taking place at the Grand Regency Ballroom—the most prestigious venue in the state. Spencer thought he was attending a event where he could secure a fifty-million-dollar investment from Harrell International. He had no idea that the sole heir to that fortune was currently flying over his head.

When the chopper landed atop the Harrell Tower downtown, my father was waiting.

Raymond Harrell looked older, with silver hair framing his sharp, commanding features, but his eyes still held the terrifying intensity that had made him a titan of global industry.

"Phoebe," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he pulled me into an embrace. "You've been gone too long, my child."

"I'm sorry, Dad," I murmured into his shoulder. "I thought I could make it on my own. I thought I found someone who cared."

Dad pulled back, his eyes narrowing as he scanned my faded navy dress and the faint tear stains on my cheeks. The warmth in his expression instantly vanished, replaced by an iceberg of ruthless fury.

"Who did this to you?" he demanded softly. The quiet tone was far more dangerous than a shout.

"Spencer Reed," I replied calmly. "And a woman named Paisley Dawson. Right now, they are at the Apex gala, using my absence to build his empire."

Dad turned to Harrison. "Get the head stylist from Vogue. Get the vault opened. Bring out the Star of Azerbaijan necklace."

Harrison nodded. "And the Apex Group contract, sir?"

Dad smiled—a cold, terrifying smile. "Tell the board that Harrell Enterprises will be making a surprise appearance at the gala tonight. It's time the world meets my daughter."
