Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF SPENCER REED

Inside the Grand Regency Ballroom, crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over hundreds of high-profile guests. Wealth, power, and ambition hung heavily in the air.
Spencer Reed walked through the crowd with Paisley Dawson clinging tightly to his arm. He felt on top of the world. Paisley’s glittering gold dress drew admiring glances from young executives, while Spencer’s tailored tuxedo projected the image of a rising CEO ready for the big leagues.
"Spencer, look," Paisley whispered, pointing toward a group of wealthy venture capitalists near the champagne tower. "That’s the board of directors for Apex Group. If you secure their backing tonight, Reed Logistics will double its market value overnight."
"I know," Spencer said smoothly, taking two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter. "This is where I belong, Paisley. Not stuck at home with someone who has no ambition."
"You made the right choice leaving her behind," Paisley cooed, running her manicured nails along his lapel. "She would have been an embarrassment. People like her don't know how to shine."
Spencer felt a faint pang of guilt, but he quickly suppressed it. Phoebe had been a sweet wife, but she was boring. She wore cheap clothes, avoided public events, and had no powerful family connections. In his mind, a successful man needed a woman who elevated his status, not one who dragged him down.
"Mr. Reed!"
Spencer turned to see Arthur Vance, the senior vice president of Apex Group, walking toward them.
"Mr. Vance, an honor to see you," Spencer said, extending his hand with practiced charisma. "May I introduce Paisley Dawson."
Vance shook his hand politely, giving Paisley a brief nod. "A fine evening, Reed. I heard you were hoping to finalize the Harrell partnership deal tonight?"
Spencer’s eyes lit up. "Yes, sir. Reed Logistics is fully prepared to take on the distribution contract for Harrell Enterprises. We're just waiting for the Harrell representative to arrive."
"Well, you might be in luck," Vance said, leaning in slightly. "Word just came down from the top. Raymond Harrell himself is en route. And rumors say he’s bringing the newly announced Vice President of Harrell International."
Spencer’s heart hammered against his ribs. Raymond Harrell himself? This was the opportunity of a lifetime. If he could shake Raymond’s hand and seal the contract, his company would go public within the year.
"Is his daughter coming?" Paisley asked naively. "I read in the tabloids that Raymond Harrell has a mysterious daughter who vanished three years ago."
Vance shrugged. "No one knows what the Harrell heir looks like. She’s been kept out of the press her entire life. But whoever is arriving tonight holds the master key to the entire Harrell fortune."
Spencer tightened his grip on his champagne glass. "I’ll make sure Reed Logistics gives them a night to remember."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom slammed open.
The ambient chatter of three hundred elite guests died down instantly. The orchestra stopped playing.
A security detail clad in immaculate black suits marched in, forming a double line from the entrance toward the center stage. The tension in the room skyrocketed.
"They're here," someone whispered in the crowd.

Spencer adjusted his tie, stepping forward to get a better position. Beside him, Paisley smirked, eager to see the real elite.
Then, the main guest walked in.
