Chapter 4 - THE TRAP AT THE FIRMThe next morning at 10:00 AM, Mark was sitting in his executive conference room, hosting a high-profile meeting with prospective real estate investors. He was wearing his best charcoal suit, laughing easily, looking like a successful family man who had weathered a terrible personal tragedy.

The heavy glass doors of the conference room suddenly swung open.
Mark looked up, annoyance flashing across his face. "Excuse me, we are in a private meeting—"
He stopped dead.
Walking into the room behind me were Agent Marcus Vance and two federal marshals in tactical gear. Behind them walked a state-certified child welfare case worker holding an emergency protective custody warrant.
"Mark Mercer," Marcus announced loudly, holding up an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for infant trafficking, wire fraud, conspiracy, and falsification of medical records."
The investors bolted from their chairs, shouting in alarm and backing away toward the windows.

Mark turned chalk white. He stumbled backward into the whiteboard, his voice cracking in blind panic. "Evelyn?! What is this?! Have you lost your mind? She's unstable, she thinks our baby is—"
"Our baby is alive, Mark," I interrupted, stepping forward and looking him dead in the eye. "And thanks to your corporate bank account records, we know exactly which elite-society family paid half a million dollars for her custody."
