Chapter 6 - THE REUNIONTwo days later, in a secure private family room at the state child welfare transition center, the door opened softly.

A female social worker walked in, carrying a tiny bundle wrapped in a soft pink blanket.

My heart hammered against my ribs, a tidal wave of emotion crashing over me as my hands reached out instinctively. When the social worker placed my baby girl into my arms, the cold, dark nightmare of the past six weeks instantly melted away.

She was breathing softly, her tiny fingers curling around my thumb with fierce, perfect life.

Tears spilled over my cheeks, but for the first time, they weren't tears of grief or confusion. They were tears of absolute triumph.

"I've got you, sweetheart," I whispered, pressing my lips to her forehead. "Mommy is here. And nobody is ever taking you away again."
