Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER-IN-LAW'S COLLAPSEBefore Mark could form another lie, the glass doors opened again.

Diane Mercer stepped into the office, flanked by her lawyer, looking furious. "What is the meaning of this?! Release my son right now or I will have your badges—"

"Save your breath, Diane," I said, turning to face the woman who had watched me cry over an empty crib while helping her son traffic her own granddaughter. You're going to prison right beside him."

Diane’s mouth opened, but no words came out. The fierce, untouchable matriarch of local society instantly shrank, realizing that her family's wealth and prestige couldn't buy their way out of a federal human trafficking indictment.

The marshals moved in, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Mark’s wrists with a sharp, echoing click.

"We were never a family, Mark," I whispered. "We were just an audit."
