Chapter 3 - Shadows in the LedgerBy week three, the Whitmore estate had transformed into a war zone of rehabilitation. Gone were the days of passive compliance; Caleb was now pushing himself to exhaustion, fueled by a fierce, obsessive drive that rivaled the ambition that built Whitmore Dynamics.

Yet, tension rippled outside the gym.

One evening, while walking down the grand corridor to retrieve extra ice packs, I overheard raised voices in the private study. The door was cracked open, casting a sliver of light across the Persian rug.

It was Margaret speaking, her voice tense and worried.

"—you can't keep hiding it from her, Caleb. If the board finds out about the hostile takeover maneuver while you're physically incapacitated, Whitmore Dynamics will be carved up like Thanksgiving turkey!"

"Let them try," Caleb's cold, gravelly voice echoed through the gap. "Julian is already circling like a vulture. If I show any sign of weakness—if word gets out that I stood for even five seconds—he’ll trigger the emergency succession clause."

"Julian Vance?" Margaret gasped. "Your own cousin? He’s the one who orchestrated the audit!"

"Julian wants my company, my seat, and my life," Caleb snapped. "Emily stays out of this. She’s here for my legs, not corporate warfare."

I froze in the shadows, my hand hovering over the doorframe. Julian Vance. The name sent a chill down my spine. Rumors in the financial columns painted Julian as a ruthless corporate raider who had taken over interim control of Whitmore Dynamics the moment Caleb crashed.

Suddenly, the door swung open.

Caleb sat there in his chair, his eyes locking onto mine instantly. There was no surprise in his gaze—only a dark, dangerous resignation.

"How much did you hear?" he asked quietly.

"Enough to know you have enemies outside these walls, and you're fighting two wars at once," I said, stepping into the room. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it's none of your damn business, nurse," he sneered, crossing his arms. "You’re paid to fix muscle atrophy, not corporate espionage. If Julian finds out a young, sharp physical therapist is unlocking my physical recovery, he won't just target me—he'll target you."

I walked right up to his desk, leaned down, and stared straight into his defiant blue eyes.

"Let him try. I survived three years in an inner-city trauma ward dealing with gang crossfire and drug withdrawal. Do you really think a suit in a boardroom scares me?"

Caleb stared at me, a slow, dangerous smirk touching the corners of his mouth. "God help me, Emily. I think you're actually crazier than I am."

"That makes two of us," I replied, grabbing his physical therapy chart. "Now, stand up. Your core stability is lagging, and we have work to do."
