Chapter 8 - The Fall and the Fire"Caleb!"

I lunged forward, throwing my weight against his descending body, cushioning his fall as we both crashed onto the plush rug. Shards of ceramic from a decorative bowl shattered around us, but my arms were wrapped tightly around his chest.

For a terrifying moment, he didn't move. He lay motionless against me, his breathing shallow.

"Caleb? Can you hear me?" My voice shook as my hands flew down to check his pulse and motor response. "Caleb, squeeze my fingers."

Slowly, his fingers twitched inside mine, then curled around my hand with a firm, desperate grip.

He let out a ragged breath, burying his face in my shoulder. "I'm... I'm so tired, Emily."

The raw vulnerability in his voice pierced straight through my professional armor. I wrapped my arms around him, holding him close against the cold floor while the afternoon sun streamed through the glass windows.

"I know," I whispered into his hair, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I know you are. But you don't have to carry it all by yourself anymore."

He lifted his head, his blue eyes inches from mine. The distance between us evaporated. When his lips met mine, it wasn't born of anger or defiance—it was an explosion of everything we had fought against, survived, and built together over the past ten weeks.

It was fierce, undeniable, and utterly consuming.

When we finally broke apart, both of us breathless, Caleb managed a tired, crooked smile.

"Okay," he murmured, resting his forehead against mine. "We'll do the surgery. But only if you promise to hold my hand through every second of it."

"Deal," I whispered.
