Chapter 5 - The Betrayal WithinThe board meeting at Whitmore Dynamics headquarters downtown was scheduled for 9:00 AM sharp. By 8:30 AM, Caleb was dressed in his finest three-piece suit, standing upright with the aid of forearm crutches and my steady hand at his elbow.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked, checking his pulse. "Walking with crutches on uneven carpet after only two months is going to strain your thoracic spine."

"If I roll into that boardroom in a wheelchair today, Julian wins," Caleb said grimly, his face tight with concentration. "I have to walk in on my own power. Even if it kills me."

We arrived at the gleaming glass tower in Pacific Palisades. Flashbulbs blinded us the moment we stepped out of the car—somehow, the press had been tipped off. Reporters shouted questions, microphones thrust toward us like lances.

“Mr. Whitmore! Is it true you’re stepping down?” “Are you paralyzed permanently?”

Caleb ignored them all, keeping his eyes fixed on the revolving glass doors. I walked beside him, acting as both nurse and human anchor.

We reached the executive floor. The boardroom doors were massive slabs of polished mahogany. Inside, twelve board members sat in heavy leather chairs, murmuring quietly. Julian Vance sat at the head of the table, tapping a silver pen against the polished wood.

When the doors opened, the room went dead silent.

Every head whipped around. Jaws dropped.

Caleb stepped across the threshold, using his crutches with a rigid, painful grace, his posture straight as a monolith. He walked halfway down the long table before stopping, leaning slightly against the back of a chair.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Caleb's voice echoed with razor-sharp precision. "I hear rumors of my retirement have been greatly exaggerated."

Julian stood up slowly, his face flushed with suppressed fury. "Caleb... this is... miraculous. But physical recovery doesn't erase financial miscalculations. In fact, we have a motion on the floor regarding unauthorized capital transfers from your personal trust—"

"Stop right there, Mr. Vance," a sharp voice interrupted from the doorway.

Everyone turned. Margaret walked in, holding a high-security encrypted flash drive, flanked by Whitmore Dynamics’ chief legal counsel, Sarah Chen.

"What is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, his voice pitching upward in panic.

Sarah Chen stepped forward, plugging the flash drive into the boardroom’s main media console. "This drive contains forensic financial records proving that over the past twelve months, Julian Vance systematically diverted twenty-five million dollars of corporate research funds into offshore accounts—and framed Mr. Whitmore's accident investigation to conceal it."

The room erupted into absolute chaos.

Julian lunged toward the console. "Lies! Fabricated garbage!"

Security guards materialized instantly, pinning Julian’s arms behind his back and hauling him away as he shrieked obscenities.
