Chapter 6 - The New RegimeThree weeks later, the corner office on the top floor of the newly renovated Kuroda Logistics Tower looked nothing like a restaurant service station.

The walls were lined with floor-to-ceiling glass panels overlooking the Chicago skyline, and the massive mahogany desk was covered not with dirty coffee cups, but with high-level international shipping manifests, financial audits, and security reports.

Evelyn Brooks wore a tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit that fit her broad shoulders and tall frame to absolute perfection. Gone were the tight white service shirts and the greasy black aprons. When she walked through the open-plan offices, the syndicate's armed guards and high-ranking operatives didn't sneer or look her up and down—they stood up and bowed respectfully.

She had earned every ounce of their fear and respect. Two weeks prior, she had single-handedly uncovered a financial embezzlement scheme run by a rogue faction in the Los Angeles branch, presenting Kenji with the audit files before he even had time to sip his morning coffee.

The office door opened without knocking.

Kenji walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee. He wore an unbuttoned navy blazer over a black silk shirt, looking every bit the ruthless syndicate boss, except for the slight, genuine smile that only appeared when he was alone with her.

"You're working too late, Evelyn-san," Kenji said, setting a cup on her desk.

"I'm reviewing the Vancouver port clearances," Evelyn said without looking up from her tablet. "If we don't reroute the container shipments before the Canadian tariff changes hit on Friday, we lose two million in margins."

Kenji walked behind her chair, placing his hands lightly on her shoulders. The warmth of his touch sent a familiar, electric shiver down her spine. Over the past month, the professional partnership had slowly, inevitably blurred into something much more dangerous and personal.

"Let the Canadians wait," Kenji murmured, leaning down so his lips brushed the shell of her ear. "We have dinner reservations at a private omakase place in River North. And I expect my chief logistics director to actually show up on time."

Evelyn smiled, turning around in her chair to face him. She reached up, her fingers tracing the edge of the dark irezumi dragon tattoo visible at his collar.

"You know," Evelyn said softly, her eyes glinting with amusement, "if someone had told me a month ago I'd be running a multi-million-dollar crime syndicate from a penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, I probably would have dropped my tray a lot sooner."

Kenji caught her hand, pressing a warm kiss to her palm. "If someone had told me a month ago a waitress would completely rewire my life, I would have had them put in the river."

He pulled her up from the chair, closing the space between them entirely. "Thank goodness you didn't stay quiet."
