Chapter 7 - Shadows in River NorthThe omakase restaurant in River North was tucked behind an unmarked sliding wooden door that required a digital biometric scan to enter. It was owned by the Kuroda syndicate, a quiet sanctuary of minimalist blond wood, soft amber lighting, and the delicate scent of vinegar and fresh tuna.

Evelyn sat across the polished Hinoki wood counter from Kenji, watching the master chef slice otoro with surgical precision.

For the first time in her life, she felt completely secure. Not because she was surrounded by armed guards stationed discretely near the exits, but because she knew, with absolute certainty, that she was the most dangerous person in the room—next to the man sitting beside her.

"You're quiet tonight," Kenji noted, dipping a piece of nigiri into soy sauce.

"I was just thinking about Sophia and Travis," Evelyn said, taking a sip of chilled junmai sake.

Kenji’s expression darkened slightly. "The hostess and the bartender from The Glass Monarch? I told Sato to ensure their relocation packages were handled generously. They were sent to Miami with new identities and fifty thousand dollars each. They will never speak of what they saw."

"That's not what I mean," Evelyn said, a dry smile touching her lips. "I was wondering what Sophia would say if she could see me right now. For a year, she told everyone I was too clumsy, too heavy, too slow to ever amount to anything on the floor."

Kenji set his chopsticks down, his dark eyes locking onto hers with fierce intensity.

"People who spend their lives looking down at others do so because they are terrified of looking up," Kenji said quietly. "They mistook your patience for weakness, Evelyn. That was their fatal error."

Before Evelyn could reply, a low, urgent chime buzzed from the encrypted satellite phone sitting on Kenji’s lap.

Kenji glanced at the screen. The relaxed warmth in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, razor-sharp focus of a syndicate warlord.

"Trouble?" Evelyn asked, instantly shifting into operational mode.

"Osaka," Kenji said, sliding the phone across the counter toward her. "My uncle’s faction just seized the primary shipping terminals in Kobe. They think because I’ve been spending my time in Chicago, the American branch is vulnerable."

Evelyn picked up the phone, reading the incoming encrypted dispatch. Her eyes narrowed as she scanned the satellite coordinates and cargo manifests.

"They didn't just seize the terminals," Evelyn said, her voice dropping an octave as her analytical mind kicked into high gear. "They're trying to choke our liquidity by freezing the transatlantic microchip supply chain."

Kenji watched her, a look of profound respect and fierce admiration burning in his dark eyes. "They think they can outsmart us."

"They don't know who they're dealing with," Evelyn said, standing up from the counter and tossing her napkin aside. She buttoned her suit jacket with crisp, decisive movements. "Cancel the omakase. We're heading back to the penthouse."

Kenji stood up with her, a dangerous, thrilling smile breaking across his face. "Book the private jet, Evelyn-san. We're going to Tokyo."
