Chapter 14 - THE MASQUERADE OF SHADOWS

The Grand Ballroom of the Mediterranean palace glittered with thousands of crystal candles, reflecting off the ornate gold leaf moldings and the glittering Venetian masks worn by the corrupt elite of Europe’s criminal underworld. Soft classical string music drifted through the air, masking the heavy undercurrent of tension and paranoia that permeated every corner of the room.

Dante and Clara descended the grand marble staircase, moving with effortless grace. Dante wore a sleek black tuxedo paired with a silver half-mask that concealed the upper half of his face, while Clara was breathtaking in a crimson silk gown adorned with intricate gold embroidery, her face framed by a feather-accented red masquerade mask that made her look like an aristocratic assassin straight out of Renaissance Italy.

Keeping his hand firmly against the small of her back, Dante scanned the room, his eyes instantly locking onto the VIP balcony overlooking the dance floor. There sat Pyotr Voronov himself, flanked by four massive bodyguards with earpieces and concealed holsters, sipping scotch and surveying the crowd with cold, predatory eyes.

"He sees us," Dante murmured under his breath, his lips barely moving.

"Good," Clara whispered back, her smile radiant and warm for the benefit of the surrounding socialites as they stepped onto the dance floor. "Let him watch. Mateo should be tapping into the basement servers right about now."

As the waltz music swelled, Dante pulled Clara closer into his arms, spinning her smoothly across the marble floor while keeping his body positioned between her and Voronov’s line of sight. Her body moved in perfect sync with his, her hands resting lightly on his shoulders, her fingers brushing against the hidden shoulder holster beneath his jacket.

"You know," Clara murmured softly, her dark eyes locking onto his through her mask, "if we survive this, we’re actually going to have to take a real vacation. No guns, no dead mobsters, no theatrical ambushes."

"And where would you want to go?" Dante asked, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"Somewhere quiet," she replied, her gaze softening for a fraction of a second before hardening again as she spotted movement on the VIP balcony. "Somewhere with no marble floors and no Russian gangsters."

"It’s a deal," Dante whispered. Then, his expression instantly turned ice-cold. "Move."

At that exact second, the overhead lights in the grand ballroom flickered and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness, save for the emergency strobes.

Panic erupted instantly. Screams echoed off the high vaulted ceilings as high-society guests scrambled toward the exits. On the VIP balcony, Voronov’s bodyguards drew their weapons, but before they could locate their targets, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom blew open with a deafening crash.

Mateo and his strike team flooded the hall, their submachine guns cutting through the chaos with tactical precision, pinning Voronov’s guards to the pillars.

Dante didn't hesitate. He swept Clara behind a massive marble pillar for cover, drawing his Sig Sauer as heavy footsteps echoed from the private stairwell leading down from the balcony.

Pyotr Voronov himself appeared at the top of the stairs, clutching a heavy-caliber Stechkin automatic pistol in his right hand, his scarred face twisted into an ugly, maniacal snarl.

"Moretti!" Voronov roared over the sound of screaming guests and distant gunfire. "You think you can walk into my house and steal my empire?!"
