Chapter 15 - Flight to the Alps

The storm outside matched the tempest tearing through my soul. Rain poured in violent sheets as Declan drove his bulletproof SUV through red lights across Seattle, executing dangerous maneuvers through midnight traffic toward Boeing Field. I sat in the back seat, sobbing uncontrollably, pressing James against my chest, desperately trying to feel his fading heartbeat.

"Keep him conscious, Clara! Talk to him!" Declan screamed from the driver's seat, his eyes red and wild in the rearview mirror. "Hang on, James! Hold on for Daddy!"

We tore through the security gates of Boeing Field, spraying standing water across the tarmac. Sitting on the runway was a massive, sleek white Gulfstream jet with the silver Rowan crest painted on the tail.

The stairs were down. Standing at the top of the ramp was Eleanor Rowan, wrapped in a mink coat, holding a small glass vial containing a golden liquid.

Declan slammed the SUV to a halt, threw the door open, and ran up the stairs with me right behind him.

"Give me the antidote, Eleanor!" Declan roared, drawing a weapon from his coat and aiming it directly at his mother's heart. "Give it to me or I swear to God I will end you right here!"

Eleanor didn't even flinch at the sight of the gun. She looked at the dying baby in my arms, her eyes completely devoid of human warmth.

"Drop the weapon, Declan," Eleanor said smoothly. "If you kill me, the vial shatters, and your little son dies in three minutes. Step onto this aircraft. We fly to Geneva tonight. You will sign the Matriarch Custody Accords upon landing, and I will administer the antidote."

"You monster!" I sobbed, holding James as his breathing sputtered into a faint murmur. "He's your own grandson!"

"He is the future of the Rowan Dynasty," Eleanor corrected coldly. "And a Dynasty cannot be built by weak mothers and rebellious sons. Decision time, Declan. Sign your family away to me... or watch your son die on a wet tarmac."

Declan looked at the gun in his hand, then at James's pale, blue-tinged face. He dropped the gun to the floor.

"Take us to Geneva," Declan said, his voice completely broken. "Just save my son."
