Chapter 20 - The Forever Home

One year later. Christmas Eve.
Seattle was bathed in a gentle, magical snowfall. But the small, humble cottage on Maple Street was no longer a place of hiding or fear. It was filled with the warm scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, the crackle of a warm fireplace, and the golden glow of Christmas tree lights.
The global news networks had spent months talking about the unprecedented collapse of the Rowan banking cartel, the arrest of Eleanor Rowan, and the sensational rise of the Caldwell-Rowan Global Children’s Foundation—a non-profit organization Declan and I had built using our reclaimed wealth to protect vulnerable mothers and children around the world.
Declan sat on the plush rug in front of the fireplace, wearing an old cable-knit sweater. Resting on his lap was James, who was now a healthy, laughing one-year-old taking his very first wobbly steps toward me across the living room.
"Look at him, Clara," Declan said softly, his eyes shining with a deep, profound peace as he caught James in his broad arms, lifting him into the air to hear his innocent giggles. "He's fearless."
"He gets that from his father," I smiled, stepping over and sitting beside them on the floor, resting my head against Declan’s shoulder.
Declan wrapped his arm around us both, pulling his wife and son tight against his heart. The dark past—the confidential folders, the fake custody threats, the snowstorms, the poisoned vials, and the cold mountain fortresses—was gone forever. In its place was a love that had been tested through fire and blood, emerging completely unbreakable.
Outside the window, a lone car drove slowly past our house, its headlights sweeping across the snow-covered street. But my stomach didn't drop. My heart didn't race.
Declan leaned down, pressing his lips gently against mine, then kissed the soft top of James’s head.

"Merry Christmas, Clara," Declan whispered, his green eyes filled with endless warmth.
"Merry Christmas, Declan," I answered softly, watching our son fall asleep peacefully in his father's arms. We had finally found our safe haven—and this time, nobody would ever take it away.
