Chapter 17 - The Trap Within the Trap

Mark frowned. “What are you talking about?”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket. The screen was lit up, displaying an active group call with thirty different participants.

“My dad didn't sign the power of attorney over to your corporate entity,” I said, holding the phone up to his face. “He signed it over to the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division. And this phone has been broadcasting your entire confession to the lead prosecutor for the past ten minutes.”

Mark’s face drained of color. He took a fast step back, reaching into his coat, but before his hand could find whatever he was reaching for, two unmarked police cruisers cut off his SUVs, their headlights blinding us all.

State troopers swarmed the driveway with weapons drawn.

“Mark Vance! Hands where we can see them! Step away from the vehicle!”

Mark looked around frantically, his sharp composure shattering in an instant. “This is a misunderstanding! I am the victim here!”

“Save it for the grand jury, Mark,” a sharp female voice called out.

A tall woman in a suit stepped out of the police cruiser. It was Assistant District Attorney Sarah Vance—Mark’s estranged older sister, who had spent the last three years building a federal racketeering case against him.

“Hello, little brother,” Sarah said, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around Mark’s wrists. “Lauren wasn't the only one who kept receipts.”
