Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Last Knot

An hour later, the house was empty of police, and the remaining tension was thick, heavy, and suffocating.
Mark left without another word, driving away into the dark to begin the legal process of stripping Lauren from his life completely. Dad was upstairs in his study, packing his things to move into a hotel until the divorce went through. Mom sat in the dark living room, staring blankly at the wall, abandoned by the daughter she had ruined her life to protect.
Daniel and I stood in the quiet kitchen.
The salad bowl was still sitting on the counter, untouched.
“Claire,” Daniel said, his voice hesitant, raw with emotion. “I am so sorry. I should have told you five years ago. I should have trusted you instead of letting your mother control me.”
I looked at him. I loved Daniel. He had been a victim of my mother’s emotional terrorism and my sister’s calculated cruelty. But as I looked at his face, I felt a deep, hollow ache in my chest.
“You kept it from me for five years, Daniel,” I said quietly.
“I was trying to protect you!” he pleaded, taking a step toward me. “I thought if you knew what your mother did, it would break your heart! I thought I was protecting our marriage!”
“You weren’t protecting our marriage, Daniel,” I said, tears finally slipping down my cheeks. “You were protecting yourself from the discomfort of the truth. You let me believe I was insane for half a decade. You let my sister mock me in my own home while you carried her secret.”

“Please,” he whispered, his hands trembling. “Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not leaving you right now,” I said, pulling my car keys off the kitchen hook. “But we are not okay. And saving me from Lauren’s lie doesn’t automatically fix the fact that you lied to me every single day we’ve been married.”
