Chapter 5 - The Web of Guilt

I couldn't breathe. The room felt like it was closing in, the walls sweeping inward to crush us all under the weight of five years of calculated lies.
I turned to my mother. She couldn't meet my eyes. She was staring down at her polished shoes, her hands trembling violently.
"Mom?" My voice sounded tiny, broken. "Is that true?"
"Claire, sweetheart... she was young, she was terrified, she would have gone to prison..." Mom stammered, tears finally spilling down her manicured cheeks. "Daniel was just... he was helping the family. We were going to be family!"
"You used him," I whispered. "You used my fiancé to protect Lauren from a crime, and then you used it to keep him silent while she tormented me for five years?"
"She didn't just use it to keep him silent," Mark chimed in, his tone sharp as a scalpel. "Lauren kept the original tow truck receipts and a recording of Daniel agreeing to park the damaged car in his lot. Every time Lauren wanted something—money, favors, Daniel’s influence at his accounting firm to fix her tax issues—she pulled out that recording."
Daniel looked up at me, his eyes rimmed with red, tears trailing down his pale cheeks.
"Claire... April 14th was the night I told her I was done," Daniel choked out. "She threatened to send the recording to the state licensing board to strip my CPA license. She told me she’d destroy my career and tell you I was the one who drove the car that night. I went to that garage to tell her to go to hell. I told her I was going to turn myself in to the police the next day."
Lauren burst into a harsh, bitter laugh. "And did you, Daniel? No! Because you're a coward! You sat there and took it, just like you always do!"
"He didn't turn himself in because I stopped him," Mark said softly.
May you like
Lauren's laughter cut off instantly. "What?"
Mark pulled a small digital audio recorder from his pocket and set it next to the phone. "The night Daniel went to your garage, he didn't just argue with you, Lauren. He came to my office immediately afterward and confessed everything to me. He brought the paper trail. He gave me the evidence I needed to protect him, to protect Claire, and to expose you."
