Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs

Lauren’s arrogant smile shattered into a look of absolute, unadulterated panic.
“You... you talked to him?” she stuttered, taking a step backward until her spine hit the dining room sideboard. “Mark... you’ve been working with him?”
“For three months,” Mark said, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips. “Do you really think Daniel brought you to his office after hours? He called me the second you walked into his building. We set up the cameras together. Every touch, every suggestion, every time you called him 'honey'—it was all recorded, timestamped, and cataloged.”
I stared at Mark, then at Daniel. The fog in my brain began to clear, replaced by a sudden, sharp realization.
The shelf. The late-night phone calls. The petty boundary-crossing. It wasn’t just Lauren being an opportunistic, toxic narcissist—it was Lauren desperately trying to trap Daniel into an affair so she could hold complete control over him before Mark’s forensic audit finished.
“You set me up,” Lauren whispered, her voice trembling with rage. “You trapped me!”
“You trapped yourself the moment you thought everyone around you was too stupid to notice what you were doing,” I said, stepping forward.
For five years, I had been made to feel like the crazy one. The jealous sister. The insecure wife. The overly sensitive daughter. Every boundary I tried to set was torn down by my mother and mocked by my sister.
Not tonight.
“You thought I was weak, Lauren,” I said, my voice steady, stripped of all fear. “You thought because I kept the peace, I didn’t see you. But I saw every look. Every sly comment. Every time you tried to take a piece of my life just to prove you could.”

“Claire, please—” Mom started, reaching out her hand toward me.
“Don't touch me, Mom,” I snapped, cutting her off cold. “You sacrificed my husband, my peace, and my marriage to protect a criminal. You made me doubt my own sanity for five years just so Lauren wouldn't have to face the consequences of her own actions.”
