The silence inside the convenience store stretched like a pulled wire. Marcus stared down at the faded photograph in his trembling hands. The woman in the picture—Elena—had the same fire in her eyes that Anna possessed now.
"Where is she?" Marcus’s voice rasped, stripping away his polished corporate persona. "Where is Elena?"
Anna’s eyes welled with tears as she gently adjusted the thin blanket around her brother. "She died three days ago. The landlord threw us out yesterday. She told me... she told me you were a good man once. Before the empire took you."
Marcus closed his eyes as a wave of guilt threatened to crush him. Fifteen years ago, he hadn't abandoned Elena by choice. He had been forced out of the city by the Blackwood Syndicate—a shadowy financial cartel that controlled the city's real estate and underground operations. To protect Elena from being targeted, he had disappeared, leaving behind half of his heart and an unborn child he never knew survived.
"Sir," the store clerk interrupted nervously, holding a phone. "Do you know her? Should I still call the police?"
Marcus pulled out his wallet, slapped a stack of hundred-dollar bills onto the counter without counting them, and picked up the carton of milk. "Call them if you want," Marcus said coldly, "but tell them Marcus Vance is taking his family home."
He guided Anna and the stroller toward his bulletproof sedan parked outside. But as the heavy glass doors hissed open, the sharp click of a camera shutter cut through the quiet night air. Across the street, parked in the shadows of an alleyway, a black SUV sat with its engine idling. Inside, a gloved hand lowered a high-powered lens and tapped a touch screen.
