Chapter 2 - The Echoes of the Past

Marcus drove straight to his secure penthouse overlooking the skyline—a fortress of glass, steel, and state-of-the-art security systems. For the first time in months, Anna drank warm tea while her baby brother, Leo, slept peacefully in a soft, heated crib.
"I don't understand," Anna whispered, her knuckles white as she held the porcelain mug. "My mother lived in a damp basement apartment, working three shifts until her lungs failed. Meanwhile, you live in a palace. If you loved her, why did you leave us to starve?"
Marcus stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, monitoring the street traffic sixteen floors below. "I left because staying meant your mother's execution. The man who runs this city, Victor Blackwood, forced me into a choice: walk away and let him take my company, or watch everyone I love burn. I chose to survive so I could rebuild and tear him down."
"And did you?" Anna asked bitterly. "Tear him down?"
"I’m getting close," Marcus replied smoothly. "Which is why you being here changes everything."
Suddenly, the penthouse lights flickered and died. The backup generators whistled softly, but before they could kick in, the electronic lock on the front door emitted a sharp, red error chime.
Anna gasped, rising from her chair and pulling Leo’s crib closer. "What's happening?"
Marcus pulled a concealed firearm from a hidden drawer beneath his desk. "Stay behind me."
The heavy reinforced door didn't burst open with explosives. Instead, it slowly swung open on silent hinges. Standing in the doorway was a woman in a tailored white suit, flanked by two armed men wearing tactical gear.
"Hello, Marcus," the woman said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Fifteen years, and you still haven't upgraded your firewall."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Victoria."
Chapter 2 Cliffhanger / Hook: Victoria Blackwood—Victor’s daughter and Marcus’s current corporate rival—smirked as her eyes locked onto Anna. "You always were terrible at hiding your trash, Marcus. Did you really think we wouldn't notice when your long-lost heir popped up in a convenience store?"
