Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Legacy

The SUV tore through the neon-lit streets, water spraying high from the gutters.

"What do you mean she didn't die of an illness?" Anna demanded from the back seat, her voice rising in panic. "The doctors said her heart failed!"

Julian turned the vehicle sharply into an abandoned industrial shipping yard by the docks. "Your mother was being administered micro-doses of thallium for six months, Anna. Slow, untraceable poisoning. Victor Blackwood didn't want her dead until he was sure he could locate you to claim her proxy vote."

Anna pressed her hands against her face, her tears overflowing. "They killed her... for a board vote?"

"They killed her because of what was hidden inside that vote," Marcus said, his mind putting the pieces together at light speed. "The Vance-Blackwood split wasn't about money. It was about the blueprints for the city’s deep-water port expansion—a multi-billion-dollar government contract that controls all shipping import routes on the East Coast."

"Precisely," Julian said, killing the headlights and bringing the SUV to a stop inside a darkened warehouse. "And now that Victoria has Anna's biometric print, the board meeting tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM will finalize the transfer. Once Blackwood takes control of the port, he will liquidate all remaining Vance assets—and eliminate every surviving heir to keep the secret buried."

Anna looked down at her hands, then at the photo of her parents. "Then we stop the meeting."

Marcus looked at his daughter, seeing Elena's stubborn courage radiating from her pale face. "Anna, it's too dangerous. They have army-grade security at the corporate tower."
