Chapter 5 - THE SUBTERRANEAN ESCAPEThe descent into the old municipal steam tunnels was like dropping into the belly of an iron beast. The air was thick with the scent of damp concrete, rust, and old coal dust, illuminated only by the harsh, flickering beam of Callum’s tactical flashlight.

Leo remained unconscious in his father's arms, his breathing shallow but steady. Sarah walked directly beside them, one hand clutching a portable trauma kit she had looted from the seventh-floor supply cart, her eyes scanning the dark, dripping arches of the tunnel walls.

"How much further?" Sarah asked, her boots splashing through puddles of stagnant water.

"Two hundred yards," Callum said, his voice echoing against the brickwork. "My security detail has an armored transport waiting at the drainage junction beneath Jackson Boulevard."

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the tunnel entrance far behind them.

Clang.

Sarah froze, grabbing Callum’s sleeve. "Did you hear that?"

"Footsteps," Callum said instantly, swinging his flashlight beam backward. "Heavy boots. Standard-issue federal tactical soles."

"They woke up faster than we calculated," Sarah whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Vance must have used an emergency smelling salt capsule from his kit."

"Keep moving," Callum commanded, shifting Leo securely against his chest as he drew his sidearm with his free hand—a heavy, suppressed pistol that looked like an extension of his own arm. "Don't look back."

They sprinted down the damp concrete corridor, the sound of pursuing shouts bouncing off the curved walls behind them.

“Thorne! Stop right there! Drop the child and raise your hands!” Vance’s voice echoed through the tunnel, distorted and metallic, carrying a desperate, furious edge.

Callum didn't slow down. He pushed Sarah around a sharp concrete pillar just as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed up the brickwork inches from their heads, sending a shower of red dust raining down onto their shoulders.

"Duck!" Callum shouted, shoving Sarah down behind a rusted iron bulkhead.

He leaned around the corner of the pillar, raised his pistol with cold, absolute precision, and fired twice.

Pffft. Pffft.

Down the tunnel, the distinct sound of breaking glass and a heavy thud echoed through the dark. A federal agent’s flashlight hit the floor, rolling in circles until the bulb shattered.

"Suppressing fire won't hold them for long," Sarah said, her medical training kicking in to override her panic. "There’s an old drainage junction ahead—look at the wall schematics on that rusted plaque! If we turn the manual relief valve on that pipe, we can flood the lower drainage trench with high-pressure graywater, cutting off their pursuit completely!"

Callum didn't hesitate. He thrust his pistol into his holster, grabbed the heavy iron wheel of the drainage valve with both hands, and threw his entire weight into it.

The rusted metal shrieked in protest, refusing to budge.

"It's seized!" Sarah cried out, hearing the rapid approach of fresh boots down the corridor.

Callum gritted his teeth, the muscles in his neck standing out like steel cables. With a low, ferocious growl, he wrenched the wheel half a turn to the right.

CRACK.

The internal seal broke with a thunderous roar. A massive torrent of rushing water blasted out of the overhead pipe, transforming the narrow corridor behind them into a raging underground waterfall that swept away the pursuing federal agents in a chaotic tangle of limbs and gear.

"Go!" Callum shouted, grabbing Sarah’s hand and pulling her through the rushing spray toward the bright rectangle of light waiting at the end of the tunnel.
