Chapter 9 - THE UNBROKEN PROMISESix months later, Harwick Medical Center made front-page news across the Midwest.

A federal corruption probe, triggered by an anonymous leak containing encrypted internal communications from Captain Vance’s desk, resulted in the indictment of three federal prosecutors and the suspension of Vance himself for medical tampering and abuse of power.
At the same time, the Thorne Foundation Institute quietly treated its ten-thousandth uninsured patient free of charge.
On a crisp October afternoon, Sarah Voss stood on the glass-enclosed rooftop garden of the Institute, watching little Leo—now healthy, energetic, and running around with a soccer ball—laughing as he chased a golden retriever across the lawn.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her on the polished stone.
"You're working late again," a familiar, low voice said.
Sarah didn't turn around. She smiled as Callum Thorne stepped up beside her, leaning against the glass railing to look out over the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan. He was still wearing his impeccably tailored charcoal suit, though the tie was missing, just like that night in the elevator.
"I was reviewing the pediatric ward expansion budget," Sarah said, sipping a cup of coffee that was actually hot. "Your accountants are thieves, Callum. They tried to hide three million dollars in surplus funding."
"They're just protecting the bottom line," Callum replied dryly.
"Your bottom line is saving lives now. Get used to it." Sarah turned to look at him, her expression softening. "How is Leo holding up after his final checkup?"
"Clean bill of health," Callum said, a genuine, unguarded warmth filling his dark eyes. "The marrow transplant took completely. He asked me this morning when his favorite nurse was coming over for dinner."
Sarah laughed, feeling a profound sense of peace she hadn't known existed back when she was trapped in that Harwick elevator staring at empty coffee cups and unpaid rent checks.
"Tell him I'll bring the peanut butter crackers," she said softly.

Callum smiled, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of blond hair from her cheek—a touch so tender it defied every rumor ever told about the most feared man in Chicago.
"Deal," he whispered.
