Chapter 6 - THE SHADOWS OF CHICAGOThe heavy steel doors of the armored transport slammed shut behind them, plunging the interior into a warm, amber-lit sanctuary of leather seats and humming medical equipment.

Sarah collapsed onto a cushioned bench, her chest heaving as she ripped the wet cloth from her hair and let her dark blond locks tumble down around her shoulders. Her scrubs were soaked, her shoes ruined, and her hands covered in soot and rust.

Across from her, Callum carefully laid little Leo onto a built-in medical cot equipped with a state-of-the-art oxygen regulator and an automated IV infusion system. Within seconds, a team of two silent, black-suited medics stepped out from the vehicle's forward compartment, moving with clockwork efficiency to hook the boy up to advanced monitors.

"Vitals stabilizing," one medic reported quietly, glancing at Callum for approval. "The potassium toxicity has been completely flushed. He's going to make a full recovery, boss."

Callum exhaled a slow, deep breath—the first sign of true relief Sarah had seen on his face all night. He placed a gentle hand on his son’s cheek before turning his dark, piercing gaze toward Sarah.

"You saved his life," Callum said, his voice stripped of all mafia coldness, leaving only raw, genuine gratitude.

"I did my job," Sarah replied, though her voice lacked its earlier defensive edge. She looked around the luxurious interior of the transport, realizing the sheer scale of the operation that had just rescued them. "What happens now, Mr. Thorne? Where are we going?"

"Not 'we,'" Callum corrected gently. "You have a choice, Sarah."

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "A choice?"

"You can take a private jet to Zurich tonight," Callum said, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "My accounts will set you up with a medical foundation, a home, and complete financial security for the rest of your life. You'll never have to look at a rent check under a refrigerator magnet again."

Sarah stared at him, stunned. "And the other option?"

"You stay in Chicago," Callum said softly. "You become the chief medical director of a private, state-of-the-art trauma facility currently being funded by my organization—a hospital that actually respects its nurses, pays them what they’re worth, and treats patients based on their need, not their political connections."

The silence in the transport was absolute, save for the steady, rhythmic beep of Leo’s heart monitor.

Sarah looked down at her hands—hands that had missed an IV on a frightened twelve-year-old boy earlier that evening because she was too exhausted, too overworked, and too broken by a corrupt healthcare system.

She looked up at Callum Thorne—the most feared man in Chicago, a criminal mastermind to the police, but a fiercely devoted father to his son.

"If I stay," Sarah said slowly, her voice ringing with clear, unwavering resolve, "I have one condition."

Callum’s eyes narrowed slightly, intrigued. "Name it."
