Chapter 1 - The Trap Beneath the ChandelierThe silence left behind by Marcus Hale wasn't a peaceful one; it was the kind of charged vacuum that sucks the air right out of a room. Two hundred people in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos were suddenly intensely interested in the intricate patterns of the Grand Oak Hotel’s ceiling.

Rachel’s hand was still welded to mine, her fingers damp with adrenaline. I could feel the microscopic tremor running up her forearm, a physical manifestation of six years of residual terror compressed into a single, agonizing minute.
"Nathan," she whispered, her voice dropping below the ambient murmur of the string quartet tuning up on the elevated stage. "You shouldn't have lied about that. The rings... God, Nathan, why did you say we were married?"
I looked down at her. Under the golden glow of the crystal chandeliers, her amber eyes looked like fractured glass, sharp and reflecting a storm of conflicting emotions—gratitude, absolute panic, and a terrifying vulnerability.
"Because," I said, keeping my voice low and steady, anchoring my feet to the polished hardwood floor, "standing there watching him corner you like a trapped animal made me realize something. I’m terrible at standing by."
"He’s going to look into us," she hissed, glancing frantically toward the double mahogany doors where Marcus had vanished into the crowd. "Marcus doesn't just let things go. He treats life like a corporate acquisition. If he finds out we fabricated a marriage—if he finds out you lied to protect me in front of half of Charlotte’s elite—he’ll use it. He’ll tear our lives apart piece by piece just to prove he can control the board."
Before I could answer, a sharp, clear chime rang out across the ballroom.
Clink, clink, clink.
We both snapped our heads toward the dais. Standing by the microphone with a glass of crystal-clear champagne in his hand was none other than Harrison Vance, our old college dean and the host of this cursed ten-year reunion. His smile beamed with self-importance.
"Good evening, alumni of Class '16," Harrison boomed, his voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Before we dive into the open bar and the memories, we have a very special announcement. A generous benefactor has just updated our endowment fund by a cool half-million dollars. And coincidentally, that same benefactor requested a special toast to celebrate new beginnings, unexpected reunions, and... binding legal contracts."
Rachel froze. Her hand went ice-cold in mine.
Harrison scanned the crowd, his eyes landing directly on us, pinning us under a spotlight as merciless as an interrogation room.
"I’m told," Harrison continued, his smile widening into a predatory grin, "we have a newly minted couple in our midst tonight. Let’s give a massive round of applause to Nathan Brooks and Rachel Carter... or should I say, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks?"
May you like
The ballroom erupted into applause. Two hundred heads turned in unison.
And from the shadows beside the velvet draping near the exit, Marcus Hale stepped back into the light, raising his champagne glass to us with a slow, chilling smile.
