Chapter 3 - The Badge and the WireThe ambient noise of the ballroom seemed to recede into a dull, underwater hum.

Detective Thomas Vance didn't look like a man making a polite social call. His eyes were hard, fixed on mine with the practiced scrutiny of someone who spent his entire career tearing down alibis.

"A stolen corporate identity, Detective?" I asked, keeping my voice level, though my heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Beside me, Rachel’s fingers twitched, her nails digging into the silk of her clutch. "That’s a heavy accusation to throw at a wedding celebration."

"It's not an accusation yet, Mr. Brooks," Thomas replied, gesturing toward a set of private glass-walled VIP antechambers flanking the ballroom. "It’s an inquiry. The endowment check deposited thirty minutes ago under your name—or rather, processed through your newly reactivated consulting firm—is tied to an offshore shell company currently under federal investigation. Shall we?"

Before I could form a response, Marcus Hale materialized over Detective Vance's shoulder like a ghost appearing on cue. His smile was razor-thin, a masterpiece of feigned concern.

"Is there a problem, Thomas?" Marcus asked, projecting his voice just enough for the surrounding curious onlookers to hear. "I saw the detectives arrive and thought I’d check in. After all, as a board trustee, any financial irregularities concerning the endowment fund affect us all. Especially... donations linked to sudden, unexpected marriages."

The trap clicked shut with a deafening, metallic snap.

It wasn't just about an ex-husband trying to win back his former wife or assert dominance in a crowded room. This was an orchestrated takedown. Marcus had funneled dirty money through a dormant account bearing my old credentials, tied it to the gala's endowment, and sicced his brother-in-law—or close personal ally in the department—on us to brand me a white-collar criminal on public display.

Rachel stepped in front of me, her body language shifting from defensive to lethal.

"Marcus," she said, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a scalpel. "You never did know when an obsession became a criminal offense."

Marcus’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second—just a hairline fracture in his immaculate facade. "Rachel, sweetheart, I’m just concerned. You rush into a wedding with a man who disappeared into the mountains for five years, and suddenly federal funds are moving through his accounts? I’m trying to protect you from another catastrophic mistake."

"You couldn't protect a paper bag from a gentle breeze," I said, stepping past Rachel and squaring my shoulders against Marcus and the detective. "Let’s go to the antechamber, Detective. But before we do, let's make one thing clear: anything found in those accounts is going to be audited right in front of the state prosecutor. And I’m sure the federal investigators will love tracing the IP address of the terminal that authorized the transfer."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed into microscopic slits. The color drained slightly from his expensive tan.

"Lead the way, Detective," I added, offering a tight, unyielding smile. "Let's see who gets handcuffed first."
