Chapter 10 - The Final TwistLater that evening, as the gala wound down and the guests began to drift out into the cool Charlotte night, I stepped out onto the secluded stone terrace overlooking the city skyline.

The air was warm, smelling of jasmine and distant rain.
I pulled out my phone to check the final audit reports from the federal prosecutor's office regarding Marcus Hale's trial. He was currently sitting in a federal holding facility in Atlanta, facing twenty-five years for embezzlement, forgery, and financial extortion. His empire was dust. His name was mud.
Suddenly, the glass door behind me clicked open.
Footsteps approached softly across the stone pavers.
"Looking for someone, Mr. Brooks?" a smooth, familiar voice asked.
I turned around.
Standing in the shadows of the stone archway wasn't Rachel.
It was Elena Rostova.
She held a manila folder in her hand, her expression completely unreadable beneath the amber glow of the terrace lanterns.
"Elena," I said, slipping my phone into my pocket. "I thought you flew back to New York this morning."
"I did," she replied, stepping closer and extending the manila folder across the gap between us. "Then I received a priority wire transmission through an anonymous proxy server five minutes ago. I thought you might want to see it before you enjoy the rest of your evening."
My instincts went on high alert. I took the folder, flipped open the heavy cardboard cover, and pulled out the single sheet of paper inside.
My eyes scanned the lines of encrypted digital code, routing numbers, and corporate signatures.
My breath caught in my throat.
The wire transfer wasn't from Marcus Hale.
It was from an offshore trust fund registered in the Cayman Islands under a completely different name—a trust fund that had just transferred ten million dollars directly into the Carter-Brooks Foundation's primary reserve account five minutes before the gala began.
And at the bottom of the document, beneath the corporate seal, was a signature I hadn't seen in ten years—the signature of someone the entire city of Charlotte believed had died in a private plane crash in Zurich a decade ago.
Harrison Vance's silent partner. Rachel’s real biological uncle. And the man who engineered Marcus Hale's downfall from the very shadows.
I looked up slowly, staring at Elena in absolute shock.
Elena gave me a slow, chilling, enigmatic smile, turned on her heel, and walked back into the ballroom, leaving me standing alone under the crystal lights with the terrifying realization of the truth:
Marcus Hale wasn't the master of the board.

He was just a pawn.
