Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal

“You shouldn't have come, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice trembling slightly as she pulled the wool blanket tighter around her shoulders. “Viktor will be back within the hour. If he finds you here, he won't just arrest you—he’ll put a bullet in your head and dump you in the lake.”
“Let him try,” I said, closing the distance between us until I stood right beside her chair. I knelt down on one knee, looking up into her face—the face of the woman who had deceived me, outsmarted me, and yet still carried my child. “Did you really think I’d let you walk away forever? Did you think a few forged documents and an alliance with Vance would make me forget who you are?”
“I am not the woman you married, Daniel,” she whispered, her eyes flashing with a sudden, desperate fire. “I am Elizabeth Moretti. The daughter of the man your syndicate destroyed twenty-five years ago. I didn't marry you out of love. I married you out of vengeance. Every lie you told, every late night, every mistress you kept—it was all part of the play. You made it so easy to destroy you because you were too arrogant to look past my smile.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. The air rushed out of my lungs, and for a second, the room spun. Elizabeth Moretti. The daughter of the ghost I had buried a lifetime ago.
“Is that why you locked the nursery?” I asked hoarsely. “Because it was never meant for our baby... it was your war room?”
“No,” Claire—Elizabeth—gasped, her voice finally cracking as a sob broke through her icy facade. Her hand dropped from her stomach, pointing frantically toward the hidden door behind the bookshelf. “The nursery was for her. Everything else... was a lie. But the baby... the baby is real, Daniel. And Viktor knows it.”
Before I could process her words, the heavy front doors of the compound blew open with a violent crash.
Footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor. Viktor Vance stepped into the living room, a sleek Heckler & Koch rifle raised and aimed directly at my chest, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries.
“Well, well,” Viktor smiled, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. “The rat walks right into the trap. Drop the weapon, Daniel.”
I slowly stood up, keeping my body positioned between Viktor and Claire. I didn't reach for my gun. Instead, a slow, terrifying smile spread across my face.
“You think you won, Viktor?” I laughed, the sound echoing off the glass walls.
Viktor’s smile faltered slightly. “You lost everything, Daniel. Your empire is gone. Your freedom is gone. What could you possibly have left?”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, blinking satellite transmitter, holding it up so he could see the glowing red LED light.
“I have a dead-man’s switch,” I said calmly. “Tuned directly to the federal task force currently surrounding this property. The moment my thumb leaves this button—or my heartbeat flatlines—the complete financial records of Alcyone Ventures, including every bribe Viktor Vance paid to the governor and every dollar of cartel money laundered through your sister’s accounts, goes straight to the DOJ.”
Viktor’s face went completely white. His rifle wavered for a fraction of a second. “You’re bluffing.”
“Try me,” I whispered, stepping closer. “Call your men off. Drop your gun. Or we all burn together.”

Claire sat frozen in her chair, staring at me with a look I had never seen before—not hatred, not cold calculation, but raw, stunned awe.
“Do it, Viktor,” she whispered, standing up slowly, her hand resting firmly on her swollen belly, her eyes locked onto mine. “Drop the gun. Because he’s not bluffing... and neither am I.”
