Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

I stared at the corkboard, the blood draining from my face so fast I thought I might collapse. Every major financial maneuver, every shell company I used to clean money through the warehouse district, every offshore account I thought was buried beneath layers of encrypted cybersecurity—it was all mapped out right here on the wall of my unborn child’s nursery.
“What have you done, Claire?” I whispered to the empty room.
I stepped closer, my fingers trembling as I reached out to touch a photograph of a warehouse in South Chicago—a storage facility where we held high-end imported electronics. Except, according to the documents Claire had printed out, those containers hadn't held televisions or computers in over six months. They had held contraband weapons and smuggled currency belonging to Viktor Vance, my primary rival in the North Side syndicate.
Vance and I had maintained an uneasy truce for five years. A fragile, unspoken agreement carved out of mutual respect and equal firepower. Or so I had believed.
I pulled open the desk drawer beneath the board. Inside lay a ledger bound in black leather, bearing my initials on the cover—a ledger I had kept locked in my private safe at headquarters. How the hell did she get this?
I flipped it open. On the first page, in Claire’s elegant, flowing cursive, was a note dated four months ago:
“He thinks he protects me by keeping me in the dark. He doesn't realize the darkness is coming from inside his own house. Viktor didn't just infiltrate his business; he bought the foundation beneath it.”
My phone buzzed in my pocket, shattering the silence. I pulled it out, expecting Michael Reed with a security update. Instead, it was an unknown number via an encrypted messaging app.
The message contained a single digital video file and a text: “Look closely at your wife’s parting gift, Daniel. You think she ran away because of a mistress? How naive can a king be?”
My thumb shook as I hit play.
The video loaded. It was grainy, shot from a high-angle security camera inside a high-end Chicago boutique. Claire was standing near the counter. But she wasn't alone. Leaning against the glass display case, speaking to her with an easy, terrifying familiarity, was Viktor Vance himself.

And Claire wasn't cowering. She was handing him a manila folder—the exact twin of the ledger in my hand.
The ground beneath me felt like it had dissolved entirely. My wife hadn't just discovered my betrayal; she had orchestrated an alliance with the most dangerous man in Illinois. And my unborn child was trapped right in the middle of it.
