Chapter 29 - Dawn of a New Empire

Three days later, the sun rose over the Chicago skyline, casting a brilliant golden glow across Lake Michigan. The city looked different—quieter, cleaner, as if a great weight had been lifted from its iron shoulders.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of our newly secured penthouse on the Gold Coast—not the old one, but a sprawling, heavily fortified estate overlooking the harbor.
Behind me, the soft sound of bare feet padded across the hardwood floor.
I turned around. Elizabeth stood in the doorway, wearing a loose white silk robe, her seven-month baby bump visible beneath the soft fabric. Her hair fell in dark waves over her shoulders, and for the first time in months, the haunted, defensive look in her eyes was entirely gone.
“You’re up early,” she said softly, walking over to join me by the window.
“Old habits,” I replied, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her gently against my side. Her warmth anchored me in a way power and money never could. “How are you feeling?”
“Like a woman who finally woke up from a very long nightmare,” she smiled, resting her hand over mine on her stomach. “Is it really over?”
“It’s over,” I kissed the top of her head. “Viktor is locked away in a private facility where no corrupt judge will ever touch him. Evelyn’s accounts have been completely wiped. Carter Holdings is being restructured under a legitimate holding corporation. No more guns, no more shadows.”
Elizabeth turned to look up at me, her dark eyes searching my face with a gentle, disarming vulnerability. “And what about us, Daniel? Are we going to play house now? Are you going to be a suburban husband?”
May you like
I smiled, a genuine, easy smile that I hadn't felt in twenty years. “Not suburban. But I think I can manage being a father. And a husband who actually stays home for dinner.”
She let out a soft laugh, leaning her head against my chest as we watched the Chicago skyline wake up beneath a clear, endless winter sky.
