Chapter 23 - The Ghost of Moretti

We broke through the back service exit of the compound just as Michael Reed’s armored Ford truck plowed through the wooden security gate, its headlights cutting blinding swathes through the freezing downpour.
Michael swung open the passenger door. “Get in! Get in now! Evelyn brought a full tactical squad from the Chicago precinct—they’re clean cops on her payroll!”
I hoisted Elizabeth into the back seat, climbing in immediately after her and slamming the heavy armored door shut. Michael slammed his foot on the accelerator, tearing down the muddy access road as bullets pinged harmlessly off the reinforced steel plating of the truck.
Inside the dim cabin, the only light came from the dashboard instruments. Elizabeth sat huddled in the center of the seat, her hands resting tightly on her knees. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps.
“You lied to me about everything, Elizabeth,” I said, keeping my voice low so Michael could concentrate on driving. “From the moment you walked into that art gallery in Lincoln Park three years ago.”
She turned her head slowly, looking at me with eyes that reflected the green dashboard glow. “I didn't lie about my name, Daniel. Claire was my middle name. My mother used it to hide me after my father died. But Moretti? Yes. That was real. Your mentor didn't just take his territory—he framed my father for embezzlement, drove him to ruin, and left our family with nothing.”
“And you decided to build an empire just to tear mine down?”
“Not yours,” she corrected sharply, a sudden spike of anger flashing in her voice. “Ours. For six years, I watched you become the exact monster you claimed to protect me from. You thought you were keeping me safe in that penthouse, but every time you came home smelling of blood and other women, you were signing your own death warrant.”
“So you partnered with Viktor?”
“Viktor was a tool,” she said quietly, looking down at her hands. “Just like you thought I was. I needed his logistics network to track down the hidden accounts your mentor buried overseas. But Viktor got greedy. He wanted the whole pie—and he wanted my child to secure his bloodline in the syndicate.”

“He’ll never touch her,” I growled, my hand resting over hers on the seat.
Elizabeth didn't pull away. Instead, her fingers curled slightly around mine, a silent, fragile truce forged in the middle of a war zone.
