Chapter 3 - The Critic’s Deadly Verdict

Hook: A $500,000 trap is snapping shut. Who is the mysterious man in black?
Within forty-eight hours, the news had leaked. The Royal Bistro, Mark’s crown jewel, had been handed over to a mysterious kitchen maid after a dramatic piano duel. The internet was losing its mind.
But Anna didn't care about the fame. She had work to do. She spent the next week transforming the kitchen. She fired the lazy chefs who had helped Mark mistreat the staff, keeping only the young, exploited dishwashers and line cooks who truly loved the craft. She changed the menu from overpriced, pretentious dishes to rich, soul-stirring recipes passed down from her grandmother.
Mark, however, wasn't resting. He had relocated to a rival restaurant across the street, watching like a vulture.
"She thinks she's safe," Mark laughed, pouring a glass of champagne for Emma. "But today is Day 7. Gideon Cross is arriving tonight. I personally paid him an extra fifty grand to ensure his review is a scathing, zero-star execution. By tomorrow, the restaurant reverts to me, and she will owe me half a million dollars. She will go to a debtor's prison."
Emma smirkingly adjusted her diamond necklace. "She deserves it. She’s nothing but a fraud."
At 7:00 PM, the restaurant was packed. The air was tense. Suddenly, the doors opened, and a man dressed in a sharp black suit with a silver-tipped cane walked in. The room went dead silent. It was Gideon Cross, the kingmaker and executioner of the culinary world. His face was like stone, his eyes sharp as scalpels.
He sat at a central table, refusing to look at the menu. "Bring me the chef’s special," he commanded coldly. "And tell her she has exactly twenty minutes before I walk out and write my review."
In the kitchen, the staff panicked. "Chef Anna! What do we do? It's Cross! He's notorious for destroying lives!"
Anna remained perfectly calm. She was plating a dish that looked remarkably simple: a smoked beef tenderloin with a dark, velvet-like wild berry reduction, infused with a rare blend of Eastern European spices. It smelled of smoke, memory, and heartbreak.
"Take it out," Anna said softly.
When the plate was set before Gideon Cross, he scoffed. "A rustic dish? In a establishment of this caliber? Pathetic." He picked up his fork, took a small bite—and froze.
His eyes widened. His hands began to shake. He took another bite, then another, eating with an urgency that shocked the entire dining room. It wasn't just good; it was a flavor profile that hadn't existed in the world for five years. A flavor profile that belonged to the legendary estate of the Volkov family.
Gideon slammed his hands on the table and stood up. "Who cooked this?!" he demanded, his voice echoing.
Mark, who had sneaked into the back of the dining room to witness the destruction, stepped forward with a grin. "Ah, Mr. Cross! I told you it was garbage! A fake cook using cheap tricks! Let's sign the closure notice right now—"
"Shut up, you idiot!" Gideon roared, turning on Mark. "This is the work of a genius! This is the signature dish of the late Nikolai Volkov! Who is in that kitchen?!"
The kitchen doors swung open. Anna walked out, no longer wearing a stained apron, but a pristine white chef's jacket.
"I am, Gideon," she said quietly.
Gideon Cross stumbled back, dropping his silver cane. "No... it can't be. You... you are his daughter. The girl who survived."

Mark’s jaw dropped. "What? What are you talking about? She's a nobody!"
"You fool!" Gideon screamed at Mark. "You thought you were trapping a mouse, but you just brought a dragon into your house! This woman is the sole heiress to the Volkov billions!"
