Chapter 4 - The Shadow Syndicate

Hook: The true villain steps out of the dark. The restaurant was just a decoy.

The revelation sent shockwaves through the room. The guests began filming frantically. Mark’s face went from pale to completely translucent.

"B-billions?" Mark stammered, looking at the transfer contract in his hand. "No, she signed the contract! She owes me if she fails! The contract is valid!"

"The contract is valid, Mark," Anna said, walking closer to him, her eyes burning with an intense, calculated malice. "And under Section 4, Paragraph 2 of the very document you wrote, all assets, liabilities, and subsidiary partnerships connected to this restaurant are transferred to the new owner immediately upon signing."

Mark blinked. "Yeah? So what? It’s just this stupid bistro!"

"Is it?" Anna smiled, a cold, terrifying expression. "Tell me, Mark... where did you get the money to build your new luxury hotel downtown? Where did you get the capital to fund your daughter's expensive European tours? You channeled it all through the corporate shell company registered to this restaurant’s bank accounts. By giving me this restaurant to satisfy your petty ego, you just handed me the keys to your entire empire."

Mark’s phone suddenly rang. He answered it with trembling hands. It was his chief financial officer.

"Mark! What did you do?!" the CFO screamed through the speaker so loudly the whole room could hear. "A massive legal injunction just hit our accounts! A woman named Anastasia Volkov has seized all our funds! We are bankrupt! The banks are freezing everything!"

Mark dropped his phone. It shattered on the floor. Emma let out a horrified shriek, clutching her father’s arm. "Dad? What's happening? My tournament next week! My trust fund!"

"It’s gone, Emma," Anna said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Just like my life was gone five years ago."

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the restaurant were pushed open. Four men in dark, expensive suits walked in, led by a man in his late fifties with a cruel, aristocratic face and a snake tattoo creeping up his neck.

The entire room seemed to drop ten degrees. Even Gideon Cross stepped back in genuine fear.

"Well, well, well," the man with the snake tattoo said, clapping slowly. "The little bird didn't die in the cage after all. You've grown quite a beak, Anastasia."

Anna’s fists clenched so hard her scarred knuckles turned white. "Victor."

Victor Vance—the corrupt, estranged brother of Arthur Vance, and the billionaire tycoon who had orchestrated the murder of Anna’s family to steal their global logistics and real estate empire. Mark was nothing but a low-level money launderer working for Victor’s underground syndicate.

"You really thought a few clever legal tricks and a piano song would give you your revenge?" Victor laughed, stepping into the center of the room. His bodyguards subtly reached into their jackets, revealing the handles of concealed firearms. "You've lured my pawn, Mark, into a trap. But you forgot one thing, little girl... I own the police, I own the judges, and I own this city. You might own this building now, but you won't live to see the sunrise."
