Chapter 5 - The Glass House

Julian collapsed onto his knees, dropping the wrench, his lungs burning as he gasped for air. Red laser dots danced across his chest and forehead.
“How… how did you know?” Julian sobbed, panic replacing his temporary rage.
“You’re predictable,” Arthur replied, stepping closer. “Arrogant men who fall from grace never look inward to find fault. They blame the world. They seek revenge because their ego cannot accept that they were the architects of their own destruction.”
Marcus stepped forward and forced Julian’s hands behind his back, locking him in heavy steel handcuffs.
“Take the cuffs off, Marcus,” Arthur instructed suddenly.
Marcus hesitated. “Sir? He just attempted to strike you—”
“Do as I say,” Arthur commanded softly.
Marcus reluctantly unlocked the handcuffs. Julian slumped forward on the brick path, massaging his raw wrists, staring up at the powerful old man in utter confusion.
“Why didn't you have them shoot me?” Julian choked out. “You have the power. You could have killed me and covered it up!”
Arthur walked over to a marble table, poured two glasses of iced water, and placed one on the floor next to Julian.
“Because death is an easy escape, Julian,” Arthur said, taking a sip from his glass. “And I do not believe in giving men like you an easy escape. I wanted you to see what true power looks like.”
Arthur walked to the edge of the glass house, looking out over his vast, dark estate.
“Thirty years ago, I was just like you,” Arthur spoke softly, his voice echoing in the ambient rain sounds. “I was young, ambitious, and blinded by money. I thought power was about pushing people down, making them fear me. I humiliated a poor man who worked for me. I ruined his life just to demonstrate my authority.”
Julian looked up, stunned.
“And do you know what happened?” Arthur turned to look at him, his eyes filled with a terrifying depth of regret and wisdom. “That man had a daughter. Devastated by her family’s ruin, she took her own life. That was the day I realized that cruelty is not strength. Cruelty is the ultimate weakness of a coward who fears his own insignificance.”
Arthur stepped directly over Julian, looking down at the broken young man.
“I built this empire not to crush people, but to protect what matters. But when I stepped onto that wedding floor, I wanted to see if you had a shred of humanity in you. If you had simply said, ‘Excuse me, sir, let me help you up,’ I would have given your company a fifty-million-dollar investment as a wedding gift.”
Julian felt as though a knife had been plunged into his heart and twisted. The realization hit him like a physical blow: he had literally punched away a fortune beyond his wildest dreams.
“You... you were going to help me?” Julian whispered, fresh tears streaming down his mud-caked cheeks.
“I was,” Arthur said softly. “But instead, you showed me who you truly were. And now, you must pay the full price.”
Arthur gestured to the guards. “Deliver him to the authorities. Press full charges for attempted murder, trespassing, and corporate fraud.”

As the guards dragged Julian toward the exit, Julian screamed out, his voice raw and broken: “PLEASE! MR. STERLING! JUST KILL ME! DON'T LEAVE ME WITH NOTHING!”
Arthur didn't turn back. He simply picked up his pruning shears and carefully clipped a dead leaf from his black orchid.
