Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Twist

Leo’s brow furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean, Grandfather?”

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers.

“Five years ago,” Arthur began, his voice dropping into a calm, calculated tone, “Julian Vance attempted a hostile takeover of a small manufacturing company in the Midwest. The owner of that company was a brilliant engineer who refused to sell his patents to Vance Tech.”

Leo listened intently. “What happened to him?”

“Julian framed him for corporate espionage,” Arthur continued cold-bloodedly. “The engineer was ruined, lost his life savings, and died of a stress-induced heart attack six months later. His family was destroyed.”

Leo gasped softly. “Who was the engineer?”

Arthur reached into his desk drawer and pulled out an old, faded photograph of a smiling man standing in front of a small workshop. Beside him was a young woman and a little boy holding a model airplane.

Arthur handed the photograph to Leo.

Leo stared at the picture. His hands began to shake as recognition washed over his face.

The young woman in the photo... was Leo’s late mother.

“That engineer... was your maternal grandfather, Thomas,” Arthur revealed, his voice steady yet filled with absolute, unwavering resolve. “Julian Vance didn't just strike a random old gardener that day in the ballroom, Leo.”

Leo looked up at Arthur, his mind reeling as the pieces of a massive puzzle rapidly clicked together.

“You... you set up the entire wedding?” Leo whispered in shock.

“Julian Vance spent five years using stolen patents from your mother’s family to build Vance Tech,” Arthur explained, his eyes cold and precise. “I tracked every penny. I bought his debts quietly through shell companies. I bought the Royal Diamond Hotel where he insisted on holding his wedding. I even hired his wedding planner through third parties to ensure he selected that exact date.”

Arthur stood up and walked over to the glass window, looking down at the world below like a master chess player who had just completed a game planned years in advance.

“He thought he was climbing to the peak of the world,” Arthur said softly. “I simply built the mountain high enough so that when he fell... he would never, ever recover.”

Leo sat in stunned silence. The sheer scale of Arthur’s patience, calculation, and vengeance was terrifying, yet poetic. The punch in the ballroom wasn't a sudden act of random fate—it was the final, inevitable trap that Julian Vance had walked into with his own blind arrogance.

“And what about the white roses?” Leo asked quietly, remembering the news reports of flower petals scattered across the marble floor.

Arthur pulled a single dried, perfectly preserved white orchid stem from a small wooden box on his desk.

“White roses were your mother’s favorite flower,” Arthur whispered softly, a rare tear glistening in his eye. “Justice was delivered. And the debt is settled.”
