Chapter 1 - THE BLOODLINE'S RECKONINGThe single drop of crimson blood trickling down my collarbone didn't just stain my skin; it marked the exact second Vivian Hale’s carefully constructed empire turned to dust.

She stood triumphant beside the shattered pearls, her manicured fingers clenched around the remnants of the broken silk string. The mourners in the chapel gasped at the violence of the public display, but Vivian didn't care. She thought the audience was on her side. She thought my father’s cowardly silence meant absolute immunity.

"Take her away," Vivian hissed, signaling two burly private security guards stationed by the side exit. "She's suffering a severe psychotic break. She doesn't even know where she is."

My father finally flinched, stepping half an inch forward before lowering his head like a whipped dog.

I didn't flinch. I slowly wiped the trace of blood from my neck with my thumb, leaving a sharp red streak across my skin.

Then I looked past Vivian’s triumphant grin, straight toward the back pew where the three men in gray suits sat in absolute, terrifying silence.

The middle man—Director Vance of the Federal Financial Crimes Bureau—lifted a small, heavy leather briefcase onto his lap and met my gaze. He gave a single, microscopic nod.

"You really think you've won, Vivian?" I whispered, my voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the chapel.

Vivian scoffed, tossing the broken pearls onto the stone floor with a sharp clatter. "Grow up, Claire. You're a broken, concussed orphan. Tomorrow, you wake up in Room 404 of the Oakridge Psychiatric Facility. By sunset, your father signs over full conservatorship. Mercer Biomedical belongs to us."

"It never did," I replied, my smile finally breaking through the pain in my skull.

Before Vivian could process my words, her platinum-encased phone exploded with a violent, rhythmic vibration.

Across the room, my father’s phone rang. Then the phones of half the board members sitting in the front rows began to buzz in unison.
