Chapter 2 - THE COURTHOUSE GANTLET

The steps of the New York Supreme Court were a sea of flashing lights and shouting faces.

"Mr. Walker! Did you know about your daughter?" "Is it true she's suffering from a rare genetic illness while you live in a penthouse?" "Are you stepping down from Walker & Associates?"

Ethan ignored the microphones shoved into his face, his expression a mask of absolute stone as his security detail cleared a path through the media mob. Inside his chest, however, his heart was hammering against his ribs.

He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the reporters. All he could see was Emily's pale face, her blue lips, and the way she had looked at him in the penthouse—as if he were a hero, not a monster.

He strode into the courtroom, his sharp eyes instantly locking onto the defense table. Sitting there, looking entirely untroubled, was Arthur Vance—Julianne’s billionaire father and the CEO of Vance Pharmaceuticals. Next to him sat Victor Cross, the lead defense attorney for Apex Corp, a subsidiary of the Vance empire.

Arthur Vance didn't look like a man who had just kidnapped his own granddaughter. He looked like a king assessing a peasant. He gave Ethan a slow, mocking nod.

Ethan walked straight over to the defense table, leaning down so only Arthur could hear him. "Where is she, Arthur?"

Arthur smiled smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "I don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Walker. But I suggest you focus on your opening statement. Though, from what I hear, your mind might not be fully on the law today. Family matters can be so... distracting."

"If you've harmed a hair on her head, I will dismantle your entire empire brick by brick," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, controlled rage.

"You have ten minutes to make a choice, Ethan," Arthur replied, his voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "Drop the lawsuit against Apex, let the acquisition go through, and you get the girl. Fight us, and she disappears into a medical facility overseas where you will never, ever find her. You think you're powerful because you win court cases? I own the judges, the media, and the blood running through that girl's veins."

Ethan walked back to his table. His hands, usually perfectly steady, shook slightly as he opened his legal briefcase.

"Ethan," whispered his co-counsel, Sarah, her eyes wide with worry. "The board of directors just called. They want us to request a continuance. The bad press is tanking our stock. We need to retreat."

"No," Ethan said, his eyes fixed on the judge walking into the courtroom. "We don't retreat."

The judge slammed his gavel down. "Case number 4492, Walker & Associates versus Apex Corporation. Are the parties ready?"

Victor Cross stood up, smiling. "The defense is ready, Your Honor."

Ethan stood up. The courtroom fell dead silent. Every reporter in the gallery leaned forward, waiting for the young billionaire to break, to beg for a delay, or to throw the case to save his family.

Ethan looked at Arthur Vance. Then he looked at the encrypted text on his phone one last time. He had built his entire life on logic, strategy, and winning at all costs. But as he pictured Emily curled up in his coat, he realized the rules of the game had completely changed.

"Your Honor," Ethan began, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "The plaintiff is ready. And we intend to prove that Apex Corporation has committed not just a breach of contract, but a systematic, criminal conspiracy that involves corporate espionage, human trafficking, and the extortion of an officer of this court."

The courtroom erupted into chaos. Arthur Vance’s smile vanished, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson.

Ethan had chosen war.
