Chapter 5 - THE CORRUPT EMPIRE

The federal building in downtown Manhattan was locked down under maximum security. Arthur Vance sat in a private interrogation room, handcuffed to the table, his high-priced defense lawyers hovering over him like nervous ghosts.
The door opened, and Ethan Walker walked in. He wasn't wearing his lawyer’s robes. He was in a simple black suit, his eyes burning with an intense, quiet fury. He carried a single blue folder.
"Ethan, thank God," Arthur said, trying to regain his commanding composure. "This is a massive misunderstanding. My rogue attorney, Victor Cross, took things too far. He was acting without my authorization. I was only trying to protect Emily from the media. You have to help me clear this up. We can settle the Apex suit out of court. I'll give you whatever you want. Millions. A partnership in my firm."
Ethan sat down across from the billionaire, opening the blue folder slowly.
"You don't get it, do you, Arthur?" Ethan said softly. "You think everything is a negotiation. You think everyone has a price."
"I am her grandfather!" Arthur snarled, his mask finally slipping. "I have the right to secure her future!"
"You're not her grandfather," Ethan said, sliding a document across the table.
Arthur froze, staring at the paper. It was the advanced DNA and genetic profile from the black-market clinic’s lab reports that Ethan had pulled from Victor Cross’s hands.
"Julianne knew what you were, Arthur," Ethan explained, his voice deadly calm. "She knew you were asset-stripping Vance Pharmaceuticals and selling dangerous, unapproved drugs to foreign markets. When she got sick, she realized you would use her research to bail out your failing empire. So she did something brilliant. She adopted Emily from an orphanage in Eastern Europe where she was doing medical charity work. She gave Emily her name, and she altered the birth records to list me as the father."
Arthur’s breath hitched. His lawyers looked at each other in sheer panic.
"Julianne knew that if she listed a random name, your lawyers would destroy it," Ethan continued, leaning forward. "But she knew me. She knew that if a child showed up on my doorstep with a note calling me 'Dad,' my obsessive, hyper-analytical brain wouldn't stop digging until I uncovered the truth. She knew I would fight you with every resource available under the law. She didn't leave me a daughter because of romance, Arthur. She left me a daughter because she knew I was the only predator vicious enough to kill the monster targeting her child."
"She’s a fake?" Arthur whispered, a twisted, horrified laugh escaping his lips. "The girl isn't even my blood? The patents... the legacy..."
"The legacy is gone," Ethan said, standing up. "Because Emily is my legally recognized daughter now. I signed the adoption validation papers an hour ago. And as her father, I have just handed over the complete, unredacted files of Vance Pharmaceuticals' illegal off-shore clinical trials to the Department of Justice."

Arthur jumped out of his chair, his handcuffs rattling violently against the metal table. "You've destroyed us! You've destroyed everything!"
"No," Ethan said, walking toward the door without looking back. "I just won the case."
