Chapter 6 - A NEW MORNING

Six months later, the early summer sun warmed the balcony of Ethan’s penthouse, casting a golden glow over the New York skyline.

The media storm had passed, leaving the Vance empire completely ruined. Arthur Vance and his co-conspirators were facing decades in federal prison. Walker & Associates had risen to become the most respected legal firm in the state, but its managing partner was no longer the elusive, twenty-four-hour workaholic he used to be.

Ethan stood by the glass railing, holding a cup of coffee. He was dressed in a casual linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up.

From inside the apartment, the sound of laughter echoed.

Emily ran out onto the balcony, her dark hair flying in the warm breeze. Her cheeks were flush with vibrant health, her lips a natural, bright pink. Thanks to the billions secured from her mother’s true patents, Ethan had flown in the top medical specialists in the world. The degenerative condition had been completely arrested by a breakthrough, safe application of Julianne's gene therapy.

She was carrying a bright new backpack—this one covered in colorful patches of stars and planets.

"Dad! Look!" she cried, holding up a drawing she had made in school. It was a picture of a massive, towering glass building, but at the bottom, two figures were holding hands, drawn in bright, steady crayon lines.

Ethan knelt down, looking at the drawing, a genuine, warm smile breaking across his face—a smile the corporate courtrooms had never seen and never would.

"It’s perfect, Emily," he said, pulling her into a gentle hug.

"Are we going to be late for the park?" she asked, her big brown eyes shining with excitement.
