Chapter 3 - The Diagnosis and the Secret Box

In the private VIP recovery suite of St. Jude’s—upgraded instantly by Richard’s lawyers—little Helen was resting under an oxygen tent. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the sterile, quiet room.

Dr. Aris Thorne, the chief of pediatric pulmonology, walked into the room holding a thick manila folder. He looked exhausted, his white coat rumpled, but his eyes were sharp.

"Mr. Morgan?"

Richard stood up from the leather armchair. Michael was asleep on the sofa, exhausted from the shock and emotion of the evening.

"How is she, Doctor?" Richard asked, his voice uncharacteristically fragile.

"She has severe bilateral pneumonia, combined with advanced malnutrition and early-stage systemic infection," Dr. Thorne said bluntly. "If you had brought her in even two hours later, her lungs would have collapsed permanently. She’s fighting hard, but her immune system is practically nonexistent."

Richard closed his eyes for a second, feeling a wave of nausea. "Can she be saved?"

"Yes. We’ve started her on broad-spectrum IV antibiotics and oxygen therapy. She’s stabilized for now. But Mr. Morgan... there is something else. Something you need to see."

The doctor opened the folder and pulled out a Ziploc evidence bag. Inside was the tarnished silver locket with the engraved star, along with a water-damaged, tightly folded piece of paper that had been tucked inside the lining of the child’s torn coat.

"The nurses found this when they changed her clothes," Dr. Thorne said quietly, handing the bag over. "She was clutching it so tightly we almost had to sedate her to get it out. It’s not just a locket. It has a tiny mechanical latch."

Richard took the bag. His fingers brushed the cold metal.

With shaking thumbs, he found the tiny hidden seam on the side of the silver star and pressed it.

Click.

The locket popped open. Inside wasn’t a photograph. It was a micro-SD card, no larger than a fingernail, wrapped in a scrap of plastic wrap to keep out the moisture.

Richard stared at it. "What is this?"

"I don't know," Dr. Thorne said. "I checked it on my office laptop using an adapter. It contains a single video file, dated just three days ago."

Richard looked toward the sleeping Michael, then back at the doctor. "Play it."
