Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes at Dawn

The digital clock on the hospital wall read 4:15 AM.
Richard stood frozen by the window, staring out at the grey, rain-slicked city streets below. The revelation from Helen’s video felt like a physical blow to his chest. Victor Hale—his trusted partner, his majority shareholder, the man who had stood beside him through every major expansion—was not just a ruthless businessman. He was a criminal. A murderer. And he was actively hunting little Helen to tie up loose ends.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the VIP suite clicked open.
Richard turned swiftly, his instincts flaring.
It wasn't a nurse.
Three men stepped into the dim room. They wore dark trench coats, their faces shadowed beneath fedoras. At the front stood Marcus, Victor Hale’s primary fixer, holding a silenced pistol casually by his side.
Behind him stood two large, bruising private security contractors.
Michael stirred on the sofa, rubbing his eyes. "Dad? Who are..."
"Stay back, Michael!" Richard shouted, instantly stepping between the sofa and the intruders. He lunged toward the panic button on the wall, but Marcus was too fast. With a swift motion, Marcus raised the pistol and fired a small, suppressed pop.
The bullet shattered the wall panel inches from Richard’s hand, cutting the wiring completely.
"Don't do anything stupid, Richard," Marcus said smoothly, stepping further into the room. His voice was chillingly calm. "Mr. Hale sends his regards. He was quite touched to learn about your family reunion. Unfortunately, family reunions can be terribly messy for quarterly earnings reports."
Richard’s blood ran cold, but his mind raced with ruthless precision. He wasn't just a chef anymore; he was a cornered predator.
"Victor wants the ledger," Richard said, keeping his voice steady to protect Michael and the sleeping child in the bed. "He sent you for the micro-SD card."
"Smart man," Marcus smiled, stepping closer, raising the gun toward the oxygen tent where little Helen lay unconscious. "Hand over the card and the locket. Then step away from the kids. Mr. Hale has arranged a very comfortable, permanent 'retirement' for all of you in a private cabin upstate. A tragic gas leak, most likely."
Michael began to sob softly, clutching a pillow against his chest. "Dad... make them go away..."
Richard looked at Marcus, then glanced sideways at the heavy glass water pitcher sitting on the bedside table. He calculated the distance, the weight, and the exact angle needed.
"You think Victor has already won?" Richard asked, stalling, keeping Marcus's attention locked entirely on him.

"Mr. Hale always wins, Mr. Morgan. Wealth respects power, and power respects no one." Marcus took another step forward, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "Now, hand over the—"
With an explosive roar, Richard didn't reach for his pocket. He swept his arm across the table, grabbing the heavy glass water pitcher and hurling it directly into Marcus’s face with bone-crushing force.
